Who Turkey is for

Turkey suits families with children, couples, groups of friends and first-time travellers abroad. It is easy to find an all-inclusive hotel with entertainment and a kids’ club, and the big cities have enough to keep you busy for a week. Many people go twice a year: to the beach in summer and to Istanbul in winter or spring.

Turkey also works for travellers who want more than a beach. Cappadocia, the ancient cities around Antalya and Pamukkale are easy to add to a beach week if you are after more experiences.

Seasons: when to go

The beach season on the Mediterranean runs from late May to late October. July and August are the hottest months, with daytime temperatures above 35 degrees, so June or September is more comfortable with small children or older parents. The velvet season, September and October, is loved for its warm sea and quiet beaches.

Istanbul is lovely in spring, when the tulips bloom, and in autumn. Winter there is cool and rainy, but the city stays lively. We cover it month by month in our guide on the best time to visit Turkey.

Regions and resorts

Antalya and around

Antalya is the heart of the Turkish Riviera. The city itself has the old Kaleiçi quarter and city beaches, and nearby are the resort areas: Belek with its golf courses and large hotels, Kemer with mountains right by the water, and Side with ancient ruins and sand. Getting there is easy, as Antalya airport handles most of the tourist traffic.

Alanya

Alanya is a more affordable resort with long sandy beaches, a clifftop fortress and Cleopatra Beach. There are lots of small hotels and apartments, and it suits people who don’t want to spend the whole holiday inside the hotel.

Bodrum and the Aegean coast

Bodrum means white houses, a yacht marina and waterfront restaurants. The sea here is cooler and clearer, and the atmosphere is more grown-up than in Antalya. It suits couples and anyone who enjoys an evening out without noisy clubs.

Istanbul and Cappadocia

Istanbul is a city people keep coming back to: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı and walks along the Bosphorus. Cappadocia offers valleys of stone “mushrooms”, underground cities and a sunrise hot-air balloon flight.

What to see

  • Istanbul’s historic peninsula and a ferry ride between Europe and Asia.
  • Pamukkale and ancient Hierapolis, with travertine terraces of warm water.
  • Ancient Aspendos, Perge and Side near Antalya.
  • The sunken city of Kekova, reached by boat.
  • A balloon flight over Cappadocia, weather permitting.

How to choose a hotel and meal plan

Most travellers from Uzbekistan go all-inclusive, and in Turkey it really is convenient: no need to think about restaurants, and drinks and snacks are available all day. But hotels vary a lot within that format: some have only a main restaurant, while others offer several à la carte restaurants, a water park and a kids’ club with Russian-speaking animators. Pay attention to whether the hotel is on the first line, the type of beach and the year of the last renovation.

If you like to walk around and try local food, look at small hotels with breakfast in Alanya or Bodrum. Halal food is the norm in Turkey, so you won’t need to search for it.

How many days to plan

For a beach holiday, 7–10 nights is ideal: the first days go on settling in, especially with children. Istanbul needs at least 3–4 days, and Cappadocia 2 days. A combined “Istanbul plus the sea” trip fits into 10–12 days.

FAQ

Do citizens of Uzbekistan need a visa for Turkey?

For short tourist trips, citizens of Uzbekistan can enter Turkey visa-free, for up to 30 days at the time of checking. Your passport must remain valid well beyond the end of the trip; our manager will confirm the exact requirements before booking.

When does the swimming season start in Turkey?

On the Mediterranean coast the water is comfortable from late May to late October. April and November can be warm, but the sea is cool, and the season on the Aegean is a little shorter.

Which Turkish resort is best for a holiday with children?

With small children, Belek, Side and Alanya work best: sandy or fine-pebble beaches and plenty of hotels with kids' clubs. Kemer is prettier, but its beaches are pebbly.

Can I combine the beach and Istanbul in one trip?

Yes, it is a popular plan: 3–4 days in Istanbul and a week by the sea. Domestic flights connect Istanbul with the resorts, and our manager will put the whole route together.
