Who Cappadocia suits

Cappadocia is not about the beach; it is about landscapes and experiences. Couples choose it, including honeymooners, as do photographers, hikers and history lovers. Families with school-age kids enjoy it too: children find the underground cities and caves fascinating.

There is no sea and no big city here, and evenings are quiet. That is why people rarely come for a whole week: 2–3 nights are usually added to Istanbul or a beach holiday in the south.

Season

Spring and early autumn are the best times. In April and May the valleys are green, days are warm, mornings are cool and flights run regularly. September and October are great too: dry, with soft sunshine and the grape harvest.

Summer days are hot, but the climate is dry and the evenings are pleasant. In winter the region is covered in snow and nights are freezing. It is beautiful and less crowded, but balloon flights are cancelled more often. Seasons across the country are covered in our guide on when to go to Turkey.

Where to stay

Goreme. The centre of tourist life: most cave hotels, restaurants and balloon launch sites are nearby. You can walk into the valleys from here.

Uchisar. A village by a tall rock castle, quieter, with panoramic views. A good choice for couples.

Urgup. A larger town with shops, restaurants and wine cellars. Convenient if you want a choice of cafes and a relaxed atmosphere.

Ortahisar and Cavusin. Small villages with stone houses, for those seeking seclusion.

A cave room is the signature type of stay here. It is cool in summer and cosy in winter, but some rooms have few windows, so check when choosing.

What to see and do

Hot-air balloon flight

Take-off is at sunrise, with pick-up from your hotel while it is still dark. The flight itself lasts about an hour, followed by the landing and a small celebration with a drink. If you’d rather not fly, you can get up early and watch the balloons from a viewpoint: it is free and just as impressive.

Goreme and the valleys

Goreme Open-Air Museum is a monastery complex with cave churches and frescoes. The Rose and Red valleys are especially beautiful at sunset. Pasabag Valley has its “stone mushrooms”, and Love Valley its tall tuff pillars.

Underground cities

Derinkuyu and Kaymakli go down several levels; thousands of people once sheltered in them. The passages are narrow and low, which is worth keeping in mind if you are claustrophobic.

Other activities

Horse rides through the valleys, quad bikes at sunset, potters’ workshops in Avanos and dinners with folk shows. Ihlara Canyon, with its river and rock-cut churches, makes a good full-day trip.

How many days

Two nights is the minimum, three is comfortable. With three nights you get two chances to fly and a full day for the valleys and an underground city.

Sample 3-day itinerary

Day one: arrive, check in, stroll around Goreme and watch the sunset from a viewpoint above the valleys. Day two: an early balloon flight, breakfast, then the open-air museum and Pasabag Valley. In the afternoon, explore the Rose Valley on foot or on horseback. Day three: the Derinkuyu or Kaymakli underground city, the Avanos workshops and dinner. If the flight on day two is cancelled, you still have a backup chance on the third morning.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options, usually via Istanbul with a domestic flight. You can also come by bus from Antalya or Istanbul, but it takes a long time.

Book your balloon flight early: places sell out in high season. Bring warm clothes even in summer, as dawn is chilly. Comfortable shoes are a must: the valley trails are dusty and rocky. Balloon flights are not recommended for pregnant women and people with certain health conditions, so check in advance.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

FAQ

How many days do you need in Cappadocia?

Two or three nights is ideal. That gives you a spare morning for the balloon flight in case the first one is cancelled due to wind, plus time for the valleys and an underground city.

Do balloon flights run every day?

No, flights depend on the weather and on permission from the aviation authorities. In strong wind or rain the flight is postponed, so it is best to book it for your first morning.

How do you get to Cappadocia from Tashkent?

Usually via Istanbul, then a domestic flight to Kayseri or Nevsehir, followed by a transfer of about an hour. Our manager will find the flights and connections.

Can you visit Cappadocia in winter?

Yes: snow-covered rocks and balloons against the snow look stunning. But nights can be bitterly cold and flights are cancelled more often, so it is worth allowing extra days.
