Who Bodrum suits

Bodrum is for those who want a seaside holiday with character. There are fewer huge resort complexes and more villages around bays, where you can have dinner somewhere new every night. Couples, groups of friends and grown-up travellers who care about atmosphere, food and beautiful views love it.

Families holiday in Bodrum too, but they choose their hotel more carefully: the beaches here are small and tucked into bays, and the entry into the water can be rocky. If your child needs a wide sandy beach and a water park at the hotel, Antalya is the easier choice.

Season

The swimming season is shorter than on the Mediterranean: June to September. Summer is hot, but a breeze blows off the sea and makes the heat easier to handle. July and August are the busiest months, the popular bays are crowded and restaurants need booking ahead.

May and October suit a trip without the beach or with a brisk swim: warm, quiet and cheaper. In winter many hotels and restaurants close. If you are choosing between summer destinations, have a look at our roundup of where to go in summer.

Areas and bays

Bodrum town. The castle, the marina, the waterfront and the bazaar. Great for walking, but the beaches in town are small.

Gumbet. The next bay over, with a lively waterfront, bars and shallow water. Better suited to young groups.

Bitez. A calm bay with a gentle entry into the water and beach cafes. A good choice for couples and families.

Ortakent and Yahsi. A long beach and residential neighbourhoods, quieter than the centre.

Turgutreis. The western side of the peninsula, with a long promenade, a market and sunsets over the islands. Family-friendly.

Yalikavak and Turkbuku. The north coast, with a marina, expensive restaurants and beach clubs. For an upscale holiday.

Gumusluk. A fishing village with restaurants right on the water; people come here for the sunset.

What to see and do

In town

The Castle of St Peter with its Museum of Underwater Archaeology is the main sight. The ancient theatre on the hill overlooking the bay, the remains of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the windmills on the ridge between Bodrum and Gumbet.

On the water

A full-day boat trip with swimming stops in the bays is one of the main things to do. Many groups charter a boat with a captain. There is diving, SUP and windsurfing in the windier bays.

Day trips

The Greek island of Kos is visible from the shore, but going there requires a Schengen visa, so bear that in mind. Ancient Ephesus and Pamukkale are far away and take a long day; it is easier to visit them with a separate overnight stay.

How many days

For a beach holiday, 7–10 nights. You can split the trip in two: a few nights in lively Bodrum and a few in a quiet bay. Adding 3–4 days in Istanbul makes the trip more varied.

A sample week in Bodrum

Spend the first days in your bay, settling into the rhythm. On day three, visit the Castle of St Peter and stroll around the marina. Day four: a full day on a boat with swims in the bays. Day five: Yalikavak for lunch by the marina, then Gumusluk for the sunset. Keep days six and seven for the beach and the market in Turgutreis. This pace lets you see the peninsula without spending every day on the road.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options, often via Istanbul. From the airport to the villages takes 30 minutes to an hour.

The villages are spread across the peninsula, and where you stay shapes your holiday. Without a car it is easier to stay in town or in a village with a promenade. Restaurants and beach clubs in Yalikavak are noticeably more expensive than average. Bear the wind in mind: in some bays it blows almost constantly, which is nice in the heat but not to everyone’s taste.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
