Alanya: sea, a clifftop castle and a warm autumn

A resort town on the eastern Turkish Riviera with a long season, a castle on a headland and sandy beaches. It is quieter and often more affordable than Antalya.

Who Alanya suits

Alanya is for travellers who want a warm sea, a good beach and sensible spending. There are plenty of mid-range hotels, apartments and small family-run guesthouses. Couples, groups of friends and families who are happy to head out to the town, the promenade and the cafes all love it here.

It is also a good choice for late autumn. The mountains shield the coast from cold winds, and October still feels like summer. If you want peace and quiet with everything on site, look at areas outside the centre.

Season

Swimming starts in May, and the water is warmest in July and August. Summer is hot and humid, and many people swap the beach for the pool or their room in the middle of the day. September and October offer the best mix of weather and prices.

In November the sea is still warm enough for a swim on sunny days, but the weather is changeable. In winter Alanya is quiet and not all hotels are open, though it is a lovely time to walk around the castle and the hills. To see how the weather changes across the country, read our guide on when to go to Turkey.

Areas

Centre. Cleopatra Beach and East Beach, the promenade, restaurants and the market. Convenient if you like to walk and don’t want to depend on taxis.

Oba and Tosmur. East of the centre, residential neighbourhoods with apartments and small hotels. Quieter, yet the town is close by.

Mahmutlar. A large district to the east with lots of apartments, its own market and promenade. Good for longer stays.

Konakli, Avsallar, Okurcalar. To the west, closer to Antalya. Big resort hotels with their own beaches and all-inclusive packages.

What to see and do

The castle and old town

The castle on the headland is visible from everywhere; a road and a cable car from Cleopatra Beach lead up to it. Inside you will find walls, palace ruins, a mosque and views over both bays. Down by the harbour stand the octagonal Red Tower and the old Seljuk shipyards.

Damlatas Cave

A cave full of stalactites right next to Cleopatra Beach. The air inside is humid and constantly warm, and a visit takes about half an hour.

The sea

Boat trips along the cliffs, stopping at grottoes and for a swim, are a popular half-day outing. There is beginner diving and paragliding from the mountain above the beach.

The mountains

Sapadere Canyon with wooden walkways and cold water, and the Taurus plateaus with villages and views. You can get there on a jeep safari or arrange a trip with a guide. To compare Alanya with the neighbouring resort, see our page on Antalya.

How many days

Usually 7–10 nights. A week leaves time for the beach, the castle and one or two day trips. If you plan a longer stay, consider apartments in Mahmutlar or Oba.

A sample week in Alanya

Day one: Cleopatra Beach and an evening on the promenade. Day two: climb up to the castle in the morning before it gets hot, then visit Damlatas Cave. Spend days three and four by the sea, and on day five take a boat trip along the cliffs. Day six is for the mountains: Sapadere Canyon or a jeep safari across the plateau. On your last evening, drop by the local market for spices, tea and sweets to take home.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options, most often landing in Antalya. Allow time for the transfer and don’t plan excursions on your arrival day.

Many hotels in the centre are across the road from the beach. That is normal for Alanya, but check in advance. In apartment areas, make sure there are shops and transport stops nearby. It helps to carry a few lira in cash: small cafes and market stalls don’t always take cards.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

FAQ

How is Alanya different from Antalya?

Alanya is more compact and relaxed, and the mountains shelter it enough to stretch the season a little. Hotels are simpler on average, but prices are often lower, which is why people love Alanya for its value.

How long is the transfer from the airport to Alanya?

From Antalya airport it takes about two hours, depending on the area. The small Gazipasa airport is nearby, but flights there are not always available; our manager will find the best option.

Where is the best beach in Alanya?

The best known is Cleopatra Beach west of the castle, with sand and an easy entry into the water. East Beach in the centre is sandy too, while in Konakli and Mahmutlar the beaches are mixed sand and shingle.

Is Alanya good for families with kids?

Yes, especially hotels in Konakli, Avsallar and Okurcalar with their own beach and kids' facilities. Bear in mind the long transfer from Antalya, which is noticeable with a small child.
