Best Time to Visit Turkey

Turkey works for almost any month, but the beaches, sightseeing and cities are at their best at different times. We go through the seasons by region so you can choose dates for your purpose.

highlights

  1. IBeach season on the Mediterranean and Aegean is roughly May to October
  2. IIJuly and August are the hottest and busiest months
  3. IIIMay, June, September and October suit families and sightseeing
  4. IVIstanbul and Cappadocia can be planned year-round
  5. VIn winter, Turkey means cities, thermal spas and mountains, not beaches

Turkey is big, and the weather in Antalya, Istanbul and Cappadocia in the same month can be very different. So first decide what you’re going for: the sea, a city, or experiences like a hot-air balloon flight. That’s what determines the best dates.

Beach season: May to October

Most beach holidays are on the Mediterranean coast (Antalya, Kemer, Belek, Side, Alanya) and the Aegean (Bodrum, Marmaris, Kuşadası). The Mediterranean warms up earlier and stays warm longer, so it’s the more common choice for trips at the start or end of the season.

May and early June

The air is already warm, but the sea is still refreshing in May, especially in the first half of the month. It’s a good time for those who combine the beach with sightseeing and don’t like heat. Hotels aren’t full, and the beaches are calmer.

July and August

Peak season. The sea is warm, but it can be very hot on the coast during the day, and the hotels are busy. If you’re going in these months, choose a hotel with shade on the grounds and a good pool, and schedule excursions for the morning.

September and October

The “velvet season”, which many consider the best. The sea stays warm after summer, the sun is gentler and there are fewer people. In October the weather in the south is often still good for the beach, but the evenings get cooler, and by the end of the month rain is possible.

Istanbul: spring and autumn

Istanbul is at its most interesting in April–May and September–October. In spring the tulips bloom in the parks; in autumn it’s warm with little rain. In summer the city is stuffy and crowded, and in winter damp and windy, but museum queues are shorter. More about districts and routes on our Istanbul page.

Cappadocia: almost all year

Hot-air balloon flights in Cappadocia run most of the year but depend on the wind, so plan two or three nights to have a backup sunrise. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable for walking in the valleys. In winter there can be snow and frost, but the scenery is beautiful. In summer the days are hot and the nights cool.

Turkey in winter

From November to March, people choose Turkey for city trips, thermal resorts and skiing. Beach hotels partly close for this period, and those that stay open mainly offer spas and indoor pools. The sea is too cold for swimming in winter.

How to choose the month for your trip

  • Traveling with small children. June or September: a warm sea and less heat. Details in our guide to a family holiday in Turkey.
  • You want the warmest possible sea. August and the first half of September.
  • Combining beach and sightseeing. May or October.
  • You want city life and culture. Istanbul in spring or autumn, Cappadocia any time except in hard frosts.
  • On a tight budget. The shoulder season: April, early May, late October.

Keep holidays in mind too. School holidays and long weekends in Uzbekistan coincide with higher demand, so it’s best to book popular hotels early for those dates.

How many days to plan

For a beach holiday, people usually book 7–10 nights: with a shorter stay, the flight and settling in take up a noticeable part of your time off. Istanbul needs 3–4 days, Cappadocia 2–3. A combined “Istanbul plus beach” route works well over 10–12 days.

There are several flight options from Tashkent to Turkey: a manager will find direct and connecting flights for your dates.

What to consider when planning

The closer to peak season, the faster family rooms and beachfront hotels sell out. If your dates are fixed, for example by work leave or school holidays, book early. If your dates are flexible, you can sometimes find a good deal closer to departure, as we explain in our guide to last-minute tours.

FAQ

When does the swimming season start in Turkey?

On the Mediterranean coast the water usually becomes comfortable for swimming by late May or early June. The sea is warmest in August and September, and in October you can still swim in the south.

Which month is best for a holiday in Turkey with children?

Most families choose June and September: the sea is already (or still) warm, and it's less hot than in July and August. If your child doesn't cope well with heat, it's best to avoid midsummer.

Is it worth going to Turkey in winter?

Yes, if you're going for Istanbul, Cappadocia or the thermal resorts. Winter isn't for a beach holiday: it's cool on the coast and many resort hotels are closed.

When is Turkey cheaper?

Prices are usually lower in the shoulder season: in spring before the May holidays and in late autumn. Exact prices depend on the hotel and dates, and a manager will find them for you.
