Who a UAE holiday is for

The UAE is for those who want the sea in winter without a long flight. Families with children come for the water parks and clean beaches, couples for the restaurants and views, and groups of friends for shopping and nightlife. Another common plan is a short trip over the holidays or a long weekend.

The Emirates also suit those who don’t like surprises with everyday practicalities: it is safe, transport is convenient, hotels work to clear standards, and you can get by in English in malls and restaurants.

Seasons: when to go

High season runs from late October to April. In November and March the sea is still or already warm, with daytime temperatures around 28–30 degrees. In December and January the evenings can be cool and the water cools down, but it is the best time for walking around the city. Hotels fill up early for New Year and the March holidays.

In summer the heat reaches 40–45 degrees. Hotel prices are noticeably lower at this time, and if what matters to you is a hotel with a pool and the malls, a summer trip is possible too. Month-by-month details are in our guide on the best time to visit the UAE.

Emirates and resorts

Dubai

Dubai is the top choice for a first trip. The beaches of Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, the Burj Khalifa, the old Al Fahidi district, the spice and gold souks, water parks and some of the world’s largest malls. You can stay by the sea, or in the city if walking and shopping are your priority.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital, calmer and more spacious. It has the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island with Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World. A good option for families and anyone who wants less bustle.

Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is a northern emirate with resort hotels along a long coastline and the Hajar Mountains. From here people go up Jebel Jais, the country’s highest mountain, home to one of the longest zipline courses. It suits a beach holiday without the city bustle.

Sharjah, Fujairah and Ajman

Sharjah is the cultural emirate, with museums and strict rules: alcohol is not sold here. Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman coast, is good for snorkelling. These emirates are usually chosen as an add-on or for more affordable accommodation.

What to see and do

  • The Burj Khalifa observation decks and the fountain show in the evening.
  • A dune safari with dinner at a desert camp.
  • An abra ride across Dubai Creek and the old quarters.
  • The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, best visited close to sunset.
  • Water parks and theme parks for families.

Where to stay in Dubai

The area affects your holiday more than the hotel’s star rating. Jumeirah Beach Residence and Dubai Marina put the beach, the promenade and restaurants within walking distance. Downtown is next to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, but you’ll need to drive to the sea. Palm Jumeirah has resort hotels with private beaches, but trips into the city take longer. Deira and Bur Dubai are the old part of the city, with souks and more affordable accommodation.

For families with children, a hotel with half board and a beach works well, while active travellers are better off in a city hotel near the metro. The Dubai Metro runs until late in the evening and connects the main districts.

How many days to plan

Five nights is enough for Dubai with the beach and one excursion. Seven nights lets you add Abu Dhabi and relax by the sea. If you plan to combine a stay in Ras Al Khaimah with a city programme in Dubai, take 8–9 nights and split your stay between two hotels.
