Abu Dhabi: the UAE capital for a relaxed holiday

The Emirati capital is calmer than Dubai: wide beaches, world-class museums and Yas Island with its theme parks. A good pick for families and anyone who prefers a slower pace.

Who Abu Dhabi suits

Abu Dhabi appeals to families, couples and travellers who value space and order. The city stretches along the coast and across several islands, with plenty of greenery, promenades and uncrowded beaches. For kids the big draw is Yas Island with its theme parks and water parks.

If you are after non-stop nightlife and shopping, Abu Dhabi may feel too quiet. But you can always spend a day in Dubai: it is not a long drive.

Season

The best time is November to March: warm days, a pleasant sea and cool evenings. October and April work too, though the afternoons are already hot. Summer brings very high temperatures, and the humidity by the sea makes it harder still, so a summer holiday revolves around the hotel, indoor parks and museums.

Demand rises over the winter holidays and school breaks, and hotels fill up. More on the seasons in our guide on when to go to the UAE.

Where to stay

Saadiyat Island. Wide beaches of fine sand, quiet resort hotels and the museum district. The best choice for a beach holiday.

Yas Island. Theme parks, a water park, the Formula 1 circuit and a mall. Convenient for families who come for the entertainment.

Corniche. The city waterfront with a beach and parks. Suits those who want to stay in town.

Al Maryah and Al Reem. Business islands with modern hotels and malls, handy for short city stays.

What to see and do

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

One of the largest mosques in the world, with white marble and huge chandeliers. Visitors can go in outside prayer times; modest clothing is required, and women need a headscarf. It looks most beautiful at sunset and in the evening when it is lit up.

Museums

The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, with its domed roof that lets through a “rain of light”. The Saadiyat Cultural District is growing fast, so check what is open when you travel. The Qasr Al Watan presidential palace has an exhibition on the country’s history.

Yas Island

Theme parks with rides for all ages, a water park and indoor attractions. Multi-park tickets are often better value than buying each separately. Tips for travelling with kids are in our guide to family holidays in the UAE.

Nature

The mangrove park with kayaking and boardwalk trails. Desert dunes outside the city, with safaris and dinner at a camp. The Al Ain oasis, a couple of hours away, for those who want to see another side of the Emirates.

How many days

Five to seven nights are enough to combine the beach, the mosque, a museum and a couple of days at the parks. An Abu Dhabi plus Dubai trip usually takes 8–10 nights.

Sample 6-day itinerary

Day one: check in on Saadiyat and hit the beach. Day two: the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the morning, Sheikh Zayed Mosque lit up in the evening. Days three and four: Yas Island with its theme parks and water park. Day five: kayaking in the mangroves and a walk along the Corniche. Day six: the beach or a half-day trip to Dubai. At this pace the kids get plenty of fun and the adults get time for the sea and the museums.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options, and you can fly into either Abu Dhabi or Dubai. The UAE visa is issued before departure.

The city is large and the islands are far apart, so taxis are the easiest way to get around. Mosques and government buildings require modest clothing. In summer, plan excursions around the heat and always carry water.

Tickets for the Louvre Abu Dhabi and observation decks are best bought online in advance, especially on public holidays. Visiting Sheikh Zayed Mosque is free for tourists, but entry usually requires registering in advance on the mosque’s website. On Fridays the mosque opens to visitors later because of prayers, so factor that into your plans. Saadiyat beaches can get a cool breeze in the evening, so bring a light sweater.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

FAQ

How is Abu Dhabi different from Dubai?

Abu Dhabi is quieter, greener and less densely built up. There are fewer malls and less nightlife, but more space on the beaches and a strong museum scene.

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?

Five or six nights cover the beach and the main sights. If you are going with kids for the Yas Island parks, set aside two or three days just for them.

Can you visit Dubai from Abu Dhabi?

Yes, the drive takes about an hour and a half. Many travellers stay in Abu Dhabi and spend a day in Dubai, or split the trip between the two cities.

Do I need a visa for Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is part of the UAE, so the standard Emirates visa applies, and citizens of Uzbekistan get it before the trip. Our manager will explain the process and help with the documents.
