Bangkok: temples, markets and street food

Thailand's capital is a loud, hot and incredibly tasty megacity. Golden temples stand next to skyscrapers, and the best food is often sold on the street.

Who Bangkok suits

Bangkok is for the curious. It attracts people who want to see the real Thailand, not just the beaches, and who love food, markets and shopping. Many travellers from Uzbekistan spend a few days here before or after the beach.

It is a good city for couples and groups of friends. Kids are fine too: an aquarium, parks, a zoo and play centres in the malls. But the heat, noise and crowds take stamina, so with young children it is better to keep it to 2–3 days.

Season

The most pleasant time is November to February. Days are warm but not exhausting, and you can walk around in the evening. March to May is the hottest period, when even a short walk wears you out.

From June to October it rains, usually in short afternoon downpours that don’t get in the way of plans. The city runs all year, so Bangkok can fit into a trip in any season.

Where to stay

Siam and Pratunam. Malls with the metro and Skytrain close by. Handy for shopping and a first visit.

Sukhumvit. A long road lined with hotels, restaurants and nightlife, with good transport links.

Silom and Sathorn. The business district with Lumpini Park and evening markets.

Riverside. Hotels on the banks of the Chao Phraya, with easy access to the temples by river boat.

Rattanakosin and Banglamphu. The old town by the Grand Palace and Khao San Road. Atmospheric, but with no metro nearby.

What to see and do

Temples

The Grand Palace with the Temple of the Emerald Buddha is the city’s top sight, and it is best to arrive at opening time. Next door is Wat Pho with its huge reclining Buddha and a Thai massage school. Wat Arun on the opposite bank is especially beautiful at sunset.

The river and canals

The river boat is a simple, cheap way to get between neighbourhoods. A boat ride through the Thonburi canals shows life along the water.

Markets and food

Chatuchak Weekend Market with thousands of stalls. Chinatown with street food in the evening. Night markets with food and souvenirs. Try local soups, noodles and fruit, but go easy on the chilli for the first few days.

Shopping

Large malls around Siam, wholesale clothing markets in Pratunam and outlets outside the city. Sales take place in summer and at the end of the year.

Trips out of the city

The ancient capital of Ayutthaya with its temple ruins, floating markets and the Maeklong Railway Market. Each trip takes half a day or a full day.

How many days

Three to five days are enough for the city. After that many head to the beach: Pattaya by road, or a flight to Phuket or Koh Samui. A typical route around Thailand is 3–4 nights in Bangkok and 7–10 at the beach.

Sample 4-day itinerary

Day one: settle in, then an evening walk around Chinatown with dinner on the street. Day two: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, getting around by river boat. Day three: Chatuchak if it’s the weekend, or the Siam malls, followed by a rooftop dinner with city views. Day four: Ayutthaya or a floating market. Start your mornings early: by midday the city gets hot.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options. Thailand’s entry rules have changed in recent years, so check them in our guide to the Thailand visa or with our manager.

Temples don’t allow shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops: shoulders and knees must be covered. Disrespectful remarks about the royal family are illegal in Thailand. Traffic jams can be severe, so the metro and Skytrain are the better way to get around. Carry water and take breaks in air-conditioned places.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

FAQ

How many days do you need in Bangkok?

Three or four days are enough for a first look: temples, the river, markets and malls. If you want to add Ayutthaya or the floating markets, plan five days.

Where should tourists stay in Bangkok?

For shopping and easy metro access: Siam, Sukhumvit or Silom. For the temples: the Riverside and the old town of Rattanakosin. Pratunam suits those coming for wholesale shopping.

How do you combine Bangkok with the beach?

Usually you spend 3–4 nights in Bangkok, then fly to Phuket or Koh Samui or travel to Pattaya. Our manager will arrange domestic flights and hotels.

Is Bangkok safe for tourists?

Generally yes, like any big city. Watch your belongings in crowds, use official taxis or ride-hailing apps, and don't accept "free tours" from strangers.
