Best Time to Visit Thailand

Thailand is warm all year, but the rainy seasons on its different coasts don't coincide. Here is where to go in each period so you don't end up with a stormy sea.

Travelers from Tashkent often choose Thailand for winter, when it’s cold at home and the dry warm season is under way there. But if your dates fall in summer or autumn, that’s no reason to give up on the trip: you just need to choose the right coast.

Thailand’s three seasons

Roughly speaking, the year splits into a cool dry season (about November to February), a hot season (March to May) and a rainy season (about June to October). “Cool” is relative: the days are still hot, there’s just less humidity and the nights are fresher.

The Andaman coast: Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi

The best time for Phuket is November to April. The sea is calm and clear, boat trips to the islands run, and the beaches are at their best.

From May to October this is the southwest monsoon season. It doesn’t usually rain all day, but waves build up on open beaches and you can’t swim everywhere. Hotels are cheaper and there are fewer people, so this season suits those who go for the hotel, spa and food rather than boat trips.

The Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao

Here the climate is shifted. On Koh Samui, summer and early autumn are often dry and sunny, and the main rains come roughly from October to December. That’s why Samui is a popular choice for summer trips, when the sea around Phuket is rough.

Pattaya

Pattaya is not far from Bangkok, and its weather is closer to the capital’s. The dry season runs from November to March. There is some rain in summer, but it’s usually brief. People choose Pattaya for a short trip or to combine with Bangkok.

Bangkok

You can go to Bangkok any time of year. Winter is the most pleasant for walking, spring is very hot, and summer and autumn bring downpours that end quickly. The city fits neatly into an itinerary for 2–3 days at the start or end of a beach trip.

How to choose the month

  • December to March. The classic season for Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya. High demand, especially over New Year.
  • April to May. Hot, but the sea is still good. In mid-April the Thai New Year, Songkran, is celebrated with water festivities.
  • June to September. Koh Samui and the Gulf islands, Bangkok. Phuket for a hotel-based holiday without boat trips.
  • October to November. A transitional period. On the Andaman coast the season settles in by November, while the rains start on Samui.

How many days to plan

The flight to Thailand is long, so it’s best to book 9–10 nights or more. If you want to combine Bangkok and the beach, plan 11–14 days. A manager will find direct and connecting flight options from Tashkent for your dates.

What else to keep in mind

Humidity in Thailand is high all year, so natural-fabric clothing and sunscreen are needed in every season. Take mosquito repellent, especially during the rainy season. And be sure to get travel insurance: it’s especially important for scooter rides and boat trips.

Holidays and events

Local holidays also affect your timing. In mid-April Thailand celebrates Songkran: people splash each other with water in the streets, and demand for hotels rises. In autumn there’s Loy Krathong, with lanterns floating on the water. Chinese New Year, which falls in January or February, also brings many tourists from neighboring countries, so book earlier than usual for those dates.

If you want to see a festival for yourself, tell the manager: we’ll find a hotel in an area where the atmosphere is livelier or, the opposite, somewhere quiet away from the noise.

Holidays with children

With little ones it’s easier to go in the cool season, December to February, when the heat is easier to handle. Choose hotels on beaches with a gentle slope into the water and no strong waves. School-age children will enjoy boat trips to the islands, the aquarium and animal parks.
