Travel Insurance

Medical care abroad can be very expensive for tourists. Here's what travel insurance covers, how to read the terms and what to do if you need a doctor.

highlights

  1. IYou need insurance even where it isn't required for a visa
  2. IIThe essentials are medical expenses and medical evacuation
  3. IIIAdventure activities and chronic conditions often need an extended policy
  4. IVIf something happens, call the assistance company first
  5. VTrip cancellation is a separate type of cover

People often remember insurance at the last minute and pick the cheapest policy without reading the terms. Then it turns out that a scooter fall isn’t covered and a doctor’s visit at a private clinic costs half the holiday budget. Let’s look at how to choose a policy that will actually work when you need it.

What Travel Insurance Covers

Medical Expenses

The core of any policy: paying for treatment if you suddenly fall ill or get injured. This usually includes a doctor’s visit, outpatient treatment, hospitalisation, prescribed medicines and emergency dental care.

Medical Evacuation

Transport to a hospital or back home when medically necessary. It’s the most expensive part, and a policy without it is incomplete.

Optional Extras

  • trip cancellation or interruption;
  • delayed or lost baggage;
  • personal liability;
  • personal accident;
  • adventure activities and sports.

What to Check in the Terms

Sum Insured

This is the maximum the insurer will pay. A reasonable amount varies by country: where medical care is expensive, it should be higher. For a Schengen visa, the policy requirements are set by the consulates; more in our Schengen visa guide.

Deductible

The amount you pay yourself for each claim. A policy with a deductible is cheaper, but for minor claims you may see no benefit.

Exclusions

The most important part of the contract. Usually not covered:

  • flare-ups of chronic conditions (unless included separately);
  • injuries while intoxicated;
  • adventure activities without the relevant add-on;
  • riding a motorbike without a licence and helmet;
  • planned treatment and pregnancy beyond a certain week.

Territory and Dates

The policy must be valid in every country on your route, including transit countries, and for every day of the trip, from the first to the last.

Adventure Activities

If you plan diving, surfing, skiing, safaris or motorbike rides, check whether they’re included. In Thailand, Bali and Vietnam, renting a motorbike is a common cause of tourist injuries, and a standard policy doesn’t cover it. For seasons in Thailand, see our guide on the best time to visit Thailand.

Children, Older Travellers, Pregnancy

Children are insured in the same way as adults. For older travellers, many insurers have age limits or higher premiums. For pregnant women, cover is usually limited to a certain week of pregnancy. Check the terms in advance.

What to Do If Something Happens

  1. Call the assistance company on the number in your policy. This is the golden rule.
  2. Give your policy number, your location and what happened.
  3. Follow their instructions: they’ll name a clinic where direct payment is arranged.
  4. Keep all documents: medical reports, receipts, prescriptions.
  5. If you had to pay yourself, agree this with the assistance company and collect the documents for reimbursement.

Without a call to the assistance company, the insurer may refuse to pay.

Trip Cancellation

A separate option that covers your costs if the trip is cancelled for reasons listed in the contract, such as illness or a visa refusal. It’s useful for expensive tours and non-refundable bookings. You should take it out right after buying the tour, not just before departure.

Insurance in a Package Tour

Many package tours include basic medical insurance. It’s usually enough for a beach holiday but not for an active one. For what else is included in a tour, see our guide on what the tour price includes. And our pre-flight checklist lists what to save on your phone.

When to Buy a Policy

You can buy a medical policy any time before your trip, but it’s best to do it right after booking the tour. That way you can add cancellation cover, which doesn’t take effect immediately after purchase. Check that the dates on the policy match your travel dates.

FAQ

Is insurance mandatory for travel abroad?

For some visas, such as the Schengen visa, medical insurance is a required document. Other countries let you in without it, but travelling without a policy is risky: treatment abroad is paid out of your own pocket.

What should I do if I fall ill abroad?

First call the assistance company on the number in your policy. They will tell you which clinic to go to and usually arrange direct payment. If you go to a clinic on your own, your costs may not be reimbursed.

Does insurance cover riding a motorbike?

Usually not, unless it's stated in the policy. There are often conditions about having a driving licence and wearing a helmet. Read the terms carefully.

Is insurance included in the price of a tour?

Many package tours include basic medical insurance. Check its coverage and, if needed, extend the policy to cover adventure activities or trip cancellation.
