Who Vietnam is for

Vietnam suits those who want a tropical sea in winter but aren’t ready to pay Maldives prices. Resort hotels are of a good standard, food is cheap and there is lots to do: islands, waterfalls, cable cars and markets. Families with children choose Phu Quoc with its theme parks, while couples and groups of friends go for Nha Trang or combined routes.

Vietnam is also valued for its sightseeing. Ha Long Bay, Hanoi, Hoi An and the imperial city of Hue make for a trip that doesn’t have to be all about the beach.

Seasons: when to go

Vietnam stretches from north to south, and the weather differs from region to region. The south, including Phu Quoc, is good from November to April, with the rainy season in summer. The central coast, with Nha Trang and Da Nang, is dry roughly from February to August, while autumn brings downpours and typhoons.

In the north, in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, winter is cool, around 15–20 degrees, and summer is hot and humid. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable times to go there. A detailed month-by-month table is in our guide on the best time to visit Vietnam.

Regions and resorts

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is an island in the south and the main winter destination. White beaches on the south and west sides, sunsets, a cable car to Hon Thom island, a safari park and VinWonders for children. It suits a relaxing holiday of 10–12 nights.

Nha Trang

Nha Trang is a resort city with a long promenade, cafés and boat trips around the islands. Nearby are hot springs with mud baths, the Po Nagar towers and an island with a theme park.

Hanoi and Ha Long Bay

Hanoi is the capital, with its Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and street food. From here people go to Ha Long Bay with an overnight stay on a boat, and to Ninh Binh, where rice fields are surrounded by karst cliffs.

Da Nang and Hoi An

Da Nang is a modern resort with a long beach and the Golden Bridge on Ba Na Hills. Nearby is the old trading town of Hoi An with its lanterns and tailors, and Hue is within a day’s reach.

What to see

  • Ha Long Bay, or the less crowded Lan Ha Bay, with a night on a boat.
  • Old Hoi An in the evening, when the lanterns are lit.
  • The caves and rice fields of Ninh Binh.
  • The Mekong Delta, if you are flying via Ho Chi Minh City.
  • The cable car over the sea on Phu Quoc.

Food and local costs

Vietnamese food is one of the reasons to visit the country. Pho, banh mi, fresh spring rolls, grilled seafood in Nha Trang and on Phu Quoc, and coffee with condensed milk. Street food here is cheap and usually safe if you pick places busy with locals.

Day-to-day costs in Vietnam are low: food, massage, taxis and excursions cost less than in many neighbouring countries. So even with a breakfast-only hotel, you can eat well. Cash in dong comes in handy, but large hotels and restaurants accept cards.

How many days to plan

The flight takes a long time, so it isn’t worth taking fewer than 10 nights. A beach holiday takes 10–12 nights. A combined route, such as Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and a week on Phu Quoc, fits into 14–16 days with domestic flights.

Entry and practical tips

Citizens of Uzbekistan need a visa for Vietnam, usually an e-visa obtained online before the trip. Special rules have existed for certain routes, such as arriving directly on Phu Quoc, but their conditions are strict. More in our guide to the Vietnam visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.

Riding a scooter without a Vietnamese licence is risky: in an accident, your insurance may not cover the costs. Drink bottled water and bring insect repellent.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
