Who Sri Lanka is for

Sri Lanka is for those who want a warm ocean in winter but aren’t ready to lie on a beach for two weeks straight. Couples, groups of friends and families with school-age children come here, drawn by elephants, trains through the mountains and ancient temples. Surfers choose Weligama and Arugam Bay, and ayurveda fans specialised hotels.

If you are looking for all-inclusive hotels and a calm sea without waves, the Maldives may suit you better: incidentally, it is a short flight from Sri Lanka, and many people combine the two. We compared other warm destinations in where to go for a winter beach holiday.

Seasons: when to go

The island has two monsoons, so the weather on different coasts is opposite. From December to April the west and south are dry and sunny, which is the main tourist season. From May to September those coasts get rain and waves, while the east coast has its best time.

The central part, with Kandy and the tea plantations, can be visited all year round, but it is cool in the mountains, especially in the evening. October and November are the shoulder season, when rain is possible across the island.

Regions

The south-west and south coasts

Bentota and Beruwala have hotels on wide beaches, suited to a relaxing holiday. Hikkaduwa has reefs and turtles. Unawatuna is a bay with calm water. Mirissa and Weligama offer whales from December to April and surfing for beginners. Galle has an old Dutch fort that is lovely for an evening walk.

The Cultural Triangle

The ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the Dambulla cave temple. This is the island’s main sightseeing area.

Mountains and tea

Kandy with the Temple of the Tooth and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Nuwara Eliya with its colonial houses, and Ella with the Nine Arch Bridge. The Kandy to Ella train is considered one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world, but tickets sell out early.

The east coast

Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikuda offer a summer beach season, snorkelling at Pigeon Island and quiet beaches.

What to see

  • The climb up Sigiriya early in the morning, before the heat.
  • The train through the tea plantations.
  • A safari in Yala or Udawalawe national parks.
  • Galle Fort at sunset.
  • Whale watching in Mirissa in season.

Food and accommodation

Sri Lankan food is spicy and fragrant. Rice and curry means rice with several vegetable, fish or meat curries, hoppers are bowl-shaped pancakes for breakfast, and kottu is chopped flatbread with vegetables. Tea is drunk everywhere, and on the plantations you can taste it right at the factory.

Accommodation in Sri Lanka is varied: from resort hotels in Bentota to guesthouses in Ella and eco-lodges in the Sigiriya jungle. On a sightseeing loop it is convenient to change hotels every 1–2 nights, then stay in one place on the beach for a week.

How many days to plan

The classic route takes 12–14 days: a 5–6 day sightseeing loop through Sigiriya, Kandy and Ella, then a week on the beach. A beach-only holiday takes 9–10 nights. It is easier to get around with a driver: distances are short, but the roads are slow.

Entry and practical tips

Entry to Sri Lanka usually requires an electronic authorisation arranged before the trip, but the conditions for different countries have changed. If you are not sure whether you need a visa, see our guide on how to find out if you need a visa or ask our manager.

In temples, take off your shoes and hat and dress modestly, and never take photos with your back to a Buddha statue. On the beaches, watch the flags, as currents can be strong.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
