How to Find Out If You Need a Visa

Entry rules change more often than you might think, and advice from group chats quickly goes out of date. Here is where to check the information and which types of entry exist.

“Do we need a visa to go there?” is the first question people ask before choosing a country. The answer affects not only your documents but also your booking timeline: if you need a consular visa, you can’t organize a trip in a week. Here is how to get a reliable answer.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Types of entry

Visa-free entry

A citizen can enter without a visa for a limited period, usually for tourism. The length of stay and conditions differ from country to country. Visa-free doesn’t mean no checks: at the border you may be asked about the purpose of your trip and for supporting documents.

Visa on arrival

The visa is issued on the spot at the arrival airport. Usually you fill in a form, pay a fee and show your documents. This option isn’t available to everyone or in every country.

Electronic visa (e-visa)

You apply online and the decision arrives by email. You show the printed visa at check-in and at the border. More and more countries are switching to this format.

In some countries, a tourist’s visa is arranged by the host: a tour operator, hotel or airline. This is how the tourist UAE visa works, for example.

Consular visa

You submit documents to an embassy or visa center, often in person, including biometrics. This is how a Schengen visa is issued, for example. It takes the most time and paperwork.

Where to check the information

  1. The official website of the embassy or consulate of your destination country. This is the main source.
  2. The country’s official visa portals, for e-visas and electronic travel authorizations.
  3. Your manager. We check the entry requirements for every destination when selecting a tour.

Be careful with intermediary websites that look official, and with advice on social media. The rules may have changed since a friend last visited the same country.

What to check besides the visa

Passport validity

Many countries require your passport to be valid for a certain period after the end of your trip and to have blank pages. If your passport expires soon, it’s better to renew it in advance.

Transit

If your route has a connection, check the rules of the transit country. If you change airports, have a long layover and want to go into the city, or travel on separate tickets, you may need a transit visa.

Children

If a child is traveling abroad with one parent or with other relatives, additional documents may be needed. Requirements are set by both Uzbekistan and the destination country, so it’s worth discussing this in advance.

Online arrival registration

Some countries have introduced online forms that must be completed before arrival. Thailand has one, for example; more in our guide to the Thailand visa.

Insurance

For some visas, medical insurance is a mandatory document, and even for visa-free countries it’s risky to travel without it.

Planning your timeline

  • Visa-free and visa on arrival: you can go as soon as tomorrow if you have tickets and a hotel.
  • E-visa: allow time for processing and possible follow-up questions.
  • Sponsored visa: arranged together with the tour, but not on the last day.
  • Consular visa: start preparing several months ahead.

What to do if the information is contradictory

Different websites sometimes say different things. In that case, the official website of the destination country’s embassy or consulate takes priority. If even that is unclear, it’s best to write to the consulate or ask us: we’ll check the current procedure for your situation.

FAQ

Where can a citizen of Uzbekistan check whether they need a visa?

The most reliable source is the official website of the embassy or consulate of the country you're traveling to, as well as that country's official visa portals. We also check the entry rules when quoting every tour.

How is an e-visa different from a visa on arrival?

You apply for an e-visa online before the trip and receive a file with your permit. A visa on arrival is issued at the airport border, and not every country offers it to citizens of Uzbekistan.

Do I need a visa for a layover in another country?

It depends on the transit country and whether you leave the transit area. If you need to collect your baggage or change airports, you may need a transit visa.

Does visa-free entry mean I don't need to prepare any documents?

No. Even with visa-free entry, border officers may ask for a return ticket, an accommodation booking and proof of funds, and the length of stay is limited.
