Goa: Arabian Sea beaches and Portuguese heritage

Goa is India's smallest state and its main beach destination. The north is loud and youthful, the south calm and family-friendly, and in between lie old churches, markets and spice plantations.

Who Goa suits

By local standards Goa is affordable, and it is a very varied destination. The north attracts young people, long-stay travellers and fans of markets and parties. The south draws families with kids, couples and those who want a beach holiday at a good hotel. Another group comes for ayurveda and yoga courses.

Goa is different from the rest of India: the Portuguese were here for a long time, so there are Catholic churches and colonial villas everywhere, plus a cuisine of its own with seafood and coconut. It is a gentle introduction to the country.

When to go

The season runs from November to March. December to February is the most pleasant time: warm and dry, with fresh evenings. The New Year holidays are the peak, when hotel and flight prices are high, so book early. If you are deciding where to go for a winter beach holiday, Goa is one of the most budget-friendly long-haul options.

From April it gets very hot and humid. From June to September comes the monsoon: heavy downpours, a stormy sea and many beach cafes closed. On the plus side, nature turns bright green and the waterfalls are in full flow.

Where to stay

North Goa

  • Candolim and Calangute: busy beaches, lots of hotels and cafes, easy access to the night markets.
  • Anjuna and Vagator: cliffs, hippie history, a Wednesday market and parties.
  • Morjim and Ashwem: quieter, with wide beaches; turtles sometimes come ashore at Morjim.
  • Arambol: the far north, with a creative vibe and cheap accommodation for long stays.

South Goa

  • Cavelossim and Varca: large resort hotels on long white-sand beaches.
  • Colva and Benaulim: beaches with facilities, but calmer than in the north.
  • Palolem and Agonda: picturesque bays in the far south, with beach huts.

What to see

  • Old Goa. The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Sé Cathedral, UNESCO-protected colonial churches.
  • Panaji. The state capital, with the Latin quarter of Fontainhas and its brightly painted houses.
  • Spice plantation. A tour with lunch and a story about cardamom, vanilla and pepper.
  • Dudhsagar Falls. A four-tiered waterfall on the border with Karnataka, best after the monsoon.
  • Fort Aguada and Chapora Fort with sea views.
  • Markets. The Saturday night market and the Anjuna market for clothes, spices and souvenirs.
  • Dolphin watching from a boat at dawn.

How many days to plan

  • 8–10 days: the beach plus 2–3 excursions.
  • 12–14 days: you can stay in two places, such as the south and the north, or add a separate trip to Hampi.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent are with a transfer, and charter programmes sometimes run in season. Our manager will find direct and connecting options.

Get medical travel insurance and be careful with food: drink only bottled water and take it easy with street food in the first few days. Beaches can have strong currents, so swim near the lifeguards.

You need a visa for the trip, and the type depends on its purpose. How to check the requirements is explained in our guide on how to find out if you need a visa. Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Food in Goa

Goan cuisine is different from the rest of India: fish curry with coconut, prawns, fiery vindaloo with Portuguese roots and fresh grilled fish at beach shacks. Many dishes are very spicy, so ask for a “mild” version. Vegetarian and halal options are easy to find. Resort hotels in South Goa have restaurants with familiar food, while the north has more small cafes with international menus at affordable prices. Order drinks without ice if you are unsure about the water.
