Who India is for

People choose India for two reasons. The first is a winter beach holiday in Goa: warmth, affordable guesthouses and hotels, and a relaxed atmosphere. The second is a cultural trip: the Taj Mahal, the maharajas’ palaces, temples and bazaars that are hard to compare with anything else. For some, India also means ayurveda, yoga and retreats in Kerala.

The country asks you to keep an open mind: noise, crowds and contrasts are normal here. First-time visitors find it easier to travel with a driver and hotels planned in advance. With small children, people usually choose Goa alone.

Seasons: when to go

The best time for most of the country is November to March. In these months Goa and Kerala are dry and sunny, while Delhi and Agra are warm during the day, though mornings in December and January can be foggy. From April to June the north is very hot, and then the monsoon arrives.

The New Year holidays in Goa are peak season with high demand for hotels, so book early. You can compare India with other New Year destinations in our selection of where to go for New Year.

Regions

Goa

Goa is India’s smallest state, on the west coast. In the north are Calangute, Baga, Anjuna and Arambol with their markets and beach cafés; in the south are Colva, Benaulim, Cavelossim and Palolem with quiet beaches. Old Goa has preserved its Portuguese cathedrals, and inland you’ll find spice plantations and the Dudhsagar waterfall.

The Golden Triangle

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur make up the classic first-trip route. Delhi has the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Jama Masjid and Humayun’s Tomb. Agra has the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Jaipur is the Pink City, with the Palace of the Winds and Amber Fort.

Rajasthan

Udaipur with its lakes and palaces, blue Jodhpur and desert Jaisalmer. A trip around Rajasthan needs at least a week.

Kerala

The south of India: houseboats on the Alleppey backwaters, the tea plantations of Munnar, the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam, and ayurvedic centres with treatment courses.

What to see

  • The Taj Mahal at sunrise, when it is less crowded.
  • Amber Fort in Jaipur.
  • Humayun’s Tomb and Old Delhi.
  • A houseboat on the Kerala backwaters.
  • The Portuguese churches of Old Goa.

How to choose a hotel

The choice in Goa is huge, from simple beach guesthouses to resort hotels with grounds and pools. First-timers and families are better off choosing proven hotels in South Goa or on the quieter stretches of the north. In Delhi and Agra it is worth staying with reliable hotel chains, which takes care of many concerns about cleanliness and safety.

Indian food is spicy, so ask for “not spicy” straight away. Vegetarian food is widespread and delicious here: dal, palak paneer, masala dosa. Dishes with halal meat are easy to find, especially in Delhi’s Muslim neighbourhoods, and chicken and mutton are the basis of North Indian cuisine.

How many days to plan

A holiday in Goa takes 10–12 nights. The Golden Triangle takes 5–6 days. A “Triangle plus Goa” or “Triangle plus Kerala” combination takes 12–14 days with domestic flights. All of Rajasthan takes 10 days or more.
