Who Azerbaijan is for

Azerbaijan is a good choice for a short 4–7 day trip. Couples come for a weekend, and families and groups of friends come for the city, the food and the mountains. Many people from Uzbekistan feel at home here: similar traditions of hospitality, plov and tea culture, and many people speak Russian.

Azerbaijan also suits those who don’t like long flights. Baku is a modern capital where the old town sits next to skyscrapers, and within a few hours you can reach mountain villages and forests.

Seasons: when to go

The best time to explore Baku is spring and autumn, when it is warm but not hot. Summer in Baku is hot and windy, but the Caspian beach season is open and the mountains of Sheki and Gabala are cool. Baku is called the city of winds, so keep that in mind when packing in any season.

In winter the Shahdag and Tufandag ski resorts are open, and Baku is decorated for New Year. The spring festival of Navruz is widely celebrated and makes for an interesting time to visit. For more spring ideas, see where to go in spring.

Regions

Baku and Absheron

Baku offers the old town of Icherisheher with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the seaside boulevard, the Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Center. On the Absheron Peninsula you’ll find the Ateshgah fire temple and Yanar Dag, the burning mountain.

Gobustan

An hour’s drive from Baku is a reserve with ancient rock carvings, plus the mud volcanoes. It is usually combined with Absheron in a single trip.

Sheki

An ancient town in the Caucasus foothills with the Palace of the Sheki Khans, painted inside, an old caravanserai and the famous Sheki halva. Nearby is the Albanian church in Kish.

Gabala and Guba

Gabala means mountains, forest, Lake Nohur and the Tufandag cable car. Guba and Gusar have apple orchards, the mountain village of Khinalug and the Shahdag resort.

What to see

  • Icherisheher and the Maiden Tower.
  • The boulevard in the evening, with views of the Flame Towers.
  • Gobustan and the mud volcanoes.
  • The Palace of the Sheki Khans.
  • Khinalug, one of the highest villages in the Caucasus.

Azerbaijani cuisine

The food is one of the great joys of the trip. Plov here is its own thing: the rice is cooked separately from the meat and served with chestnuts, dried fruit and saffron. Be sure to try qutab with herbs, dolma, piti in a clay pot, lula kebab and Sheki halva. Tea with jam in pear-shaped armudu glasses comes with every meal.

Baku has plenty of restaurants in the old town and on the boulevard where you can have dinner overlooking the Caspian. In the regions, the tastiest food is in small family places. Food is halal almost everywhere, which is convenient for travellers from Uzbekistan.

How many days to plan

Baku alone takes 3–4 days, enough for the old town, the modern architecture and Gobustan. Baku plus the regions takes 6–7 days, for example with trips to Sheki and Gabala. Some people want to combine Azerbaijan with Georgia, but the land border may be closed to tourists, so people usually fly between the two countries.

Entry and practical tips

Citizens of Uzbekistan enter Azerbaijan visa-free for short trips. You need a valid passport, and longer stays may require registration at your place of residence, so check the rules in advance.

In Baku it is easy to use ride-hailing apps and the BakuCard for the metro and buses. Dress modestly in mosques and in the old town, and carry cash in manat in the regions, as cards aren’t accepted everywhere.

If you plan to drive around the regions yourself, keep in mind that the mountain roads to Khinalug and Gabala need careful driving, and in winter it is better to go with an experienced driver.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
