Tbilisi: the old town, sulphur baths and Georgian food

A hillside city along the Kura River, where the balconies of old houses hang over narrow streets and there is always more food at dinner than you need. A great choice for a short 4–6 day trip.

Who Tbilisi suits

Tbilisi is for people who love exploring a city on foot and eating well, without a long flight or complicated formalities. It is a good option for couples, groups of friends and families, as well as first-time travellers abroad: many people in Georgia speak Russian, and the atmosphere is welcoming.

The city is compact, much of it walkable, and just beyond it lie mountains, monasteries and wineries. Tbilisi is often part of a route around the country that ends by the sea in Batumi.

Season

Spring and autumn are the best times. In April and May the city is green, warm and fresh. September and October are the grape harvest season, rtveli, when Kakheti is especially interesting. For more destinations at this time of year, see our list of where to go in autumn.

Summer in Tbilisi is hot, sometimes above 35 degrees during the day, but it is cool in the mountains. In winter the city is quiet, and the Gudauri ski resort is nearby. New Year in Tbilisi is popular too.

Where to stay

Old Town. Narrow streets, churches, baths and restaurants. Convenient for short trips.

Sololaki. The neighbouring district with old houses and grand entrance halls, quieter but just as close to everything.

Rustaveli Avenue and Mtatsminda. The centre, with theatres, museums and shops, and good transport links.

Vake and Vera. Leafy residential districts with cafés and parks, suited to an unhurried trip.

Avlabari. A district on the left bank near the Holy Trinity Cathedral, with views of the Old Town.

What to see and do

Old Town

The domed Abanotubani sulphur baths, where you can book a private room with a pool. Narikala Fortress, reached by cable car, and the Mother of Georgia statue. A waterfall in the Leghvtakhevi gorge right in the city centre. The Bridge of Peace and Rike Park on the banks of the Kura.

City centre

Rustaveli Avenue with the National Gallery and the Opera House. The Dry Bridge flea market. The funicular up Mount Mtatsminda to an amusement park and viewing platform.

Food and wine

Khinkali, khachapuri, mtsvadi, pkhali and churchkhela. Georgian restaurants for every taste and budget, wine bars and tastings.

Trips from Tbilisi

Mtskheta, the ancient capital with Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, is just 30 minutes away. The Georgian Military Road leads to Kazbegi and the Gergeti church set against Mount Kazbek. Kakheti offers wineries and the town of Sighnaghi. The Borjomi gorge and the cave city of Vardzia take 1–2 days.

How many days

The city: 3 days; with excursions, 5–7 days. A full route around Georgia including Batumi takes 8–10 days. Tbilisi can also be combined with neighbouring Baku.

Sample 6-day itinerary

Day one: the Old Town, Narikala and the sulphur baths in the evening. Day two: Rustaveli Avenue, the Dry Bridge and the funicular up Mtatsminda. Day three: Mtskheta and Jvari Monastery. Day four: Kazbegi, with an early start along the Georgian Military Road. Day five: Kakheti, Sighnaghi and a wine tasting. Day six: a free day for cafés, markets and shopping before your flight.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options. Citizens of Uzbekistan currently enter Georgia visa-free for tourist trips; check the permitted length of stay before you travel.

In churches, women need a headscarf and a skirt, and men should not wear shorts; wraps are often available at the entrance. The city is hilly, so comfortable shoes are a must. Georgian feasts are generous, so don’t plan an intense excursion for the morning after a big dinner.

The metro and app-based taxis are convenient ways to get around Tbilisi, and taxi fares are usually low. Before a trip to Kazbegi, check the road conditions: in winter and early spring the pass can be closed due to snow. Cash in lari is useful at small restaurants and markets.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
