Who Baku suits

Baku works well for a first trip abroad, a weekend break, a family holiday or a romantic getaway. It is easy here: many people speak Russian, the food, with plov, kebabs and dolma, feels familiar to visitors from Uzbekistan, and Muslim culture blends with the city’s secular, European rhythm.

The city is great for anyone who likes exploring on foot and having dinner with a sea view. If you want more nature and mountains, Baku pairs easily with the regions of Azerbaijan or with neighbouring Georgia.

When to go

The best months are April to June and September to October. In spring the parks bloom and it is warm enough to stroll, so Baku is a handy answer to the question of where to go in spring for a short trip. Autumn is mild, and in early September you can still swim.

Summer is hot but with a sea breeze. In July and August locals head to the Absheron beaches. Winter is cool and windy, with occasional snow. From November to March there are fewer tourists and hotel prices drop.

Where to stay

Icherisheher and around

The old town inside the fortress walls and the streets around it. Boutique hotels in historic houses, with everything within walking distance. The best choice for a first visit of 2–3 days.

Seaside Boulevard and Fountain Square

The heart of modern Baku: Nizami shopping street, restaurants and evening walks by the sea. Convenient for families and anyone who wants to be in the middle of city life.

Around the Flame Towers and Upland Park

High-rise hotels with panoramic views over the bay. Quiet and beautiful, but to get to the old town you will need to walk down or take the funicular or a taxi.

The Absheron coast

Resort hotels on the Caspian shore outside the city. For a summer holiday with kids combined with trips into the centre.

What to see

  • Icherisheher. Fortress walls, the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, caravanserais and narrow lanes.
  • Seaside Boulevard. A promenade several kilometres long with parks, a Ferris wheel and Little Venice.
  • Upland Park. A viewpoint over the bay and the Flame Towers, especially in the evening.
  • Heydar Aliyev Center. Zaha Hadid’s building with flowing lines and exhibitions inside.
  • Carpet Museum. A building shaped like a rolled-up carpet, with a collection of Azerbaijani carpets.
  • Gobustan. Rock carvings thousands of years old, with mud volcanoes nearby.
  • Ateshgah and Yanar Dag. A fire temple and a hillside where gas burns constantly out of the ground.

Trips out of the city

  • Sheki: the Khan’s Palace with shebeke stained glass and a caravanserai, reached by a mountain road.
  • Gabala and Shamakhi: mountains, Lake Nohur and the Juma Mosque in Shamakhi.
  • Guba and Khinalig: a village high up in the Caucasus Mountains.

How many days to plan

  • 2–3 days: the centre, the boulevard, Gobustan and Absheron.
  • 5–7 days: Baku plus an overnight trip to Sheki or Gabala.
  • 10 days: Azerbaijan and Georgia in one trip: Baku plus a few days in Tbilisi; our manager will choose how to get between them based on the current situation at the border.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options. Taxis are easiest to order through apps, either metered or at a fixed price.

The wind is part of Baku’s character. Even in summer a light jacket comes in handy on the boulevard in the evening. Mosques require modest clothing, and women need a headscarf.

The land border with Azerbaijan has operated with restrictions in recent years, so discuss any route that includes crossing into Georgia in advance. Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Food in Baku

Azerbaijani cuisine is close to Uzbek food, with its own twists: shah plov in a crust of lavash, qutab with herbs and meat, piti in clay pots and dolma in vine leaves. Tea is served with jam and sweets, and teahouses are part of city life. You will find good national restaurants in the old town and around Fountain Square. If you go to Sheki, be sure to try Sheki baklava, sold in the shops right by the palace.
