An autumn holiday often turns out better than a summer one. The kids are back at school, the peak season has passed, and the sea in Mediterranean countries is still warm. Autumn also opens the season in countries that are too hot in summer.

September: the warm late season

Turkey

Many consider September the best month for Turkey. The water is warm, the sun is gentler and the beaches are less crowded. It suits both families with toddlers and couples. More in our guide best time to visit Turkey.

Greece, Cyprus, Montenegro

A warm sea, harvest time and tavernas with free tables. September is an excellent choice for Crete and Cyprus. In Montenegro it’s noticeably quieter in September than in August.

Georgia

September marks the start of rtveli, the grape harvest season. Tbilisi is warm and pleasant at this time, and you can visit the wineries of Kakheti. People are still swimming in Batumi.

October: the season turns

Southern Turkey and Cyprus

In early October the coast still has summer weather; by the end of the month the evenings get cooler and rain is possible. If you’re going in late October, choose a hotel with a heated pool.

Egypt

In October the heat eases. Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are good for the beach and snorkeling on the reefs. The sea stays warm after summer.

The UAE

The comfortable season starts in late October: you can walk around during the day and the sea is warm. A good time to go before New Year demand kicks in.

Europe

October is the time for strolling around Rome, Barcelona, Prague and Paris. There are fewer tourists than in summer, and the weather in southern Europe is still warm.

November: the tropics and cities

Thailand and Vietnam

In November the dry season begins on Thailand’s Andaman coast and on Phu Quoc too. Rain is still possible in the first half of the month, but the weather usually settles in the second half.

Japan

November is the season of autumn maples. In Kyoto the parks and temples turn red and gold, one of the most beautiful sights in Japan. The weather is cool but comfortable.

The UAE and Egypt

A beach holiday without the summer heat. A good time for families.

Which autumn suits whom

  • Families with small children. Turkey in September, the UAE in November.
  • Couples. The Greek islands in September, Kyoto in November, Europe in October.
  • Food lovers. Georgia during the grape harvest, Italy in autumn.
  • Divers and snorkelers. Egypt in October–November.

What to keep in mind

In autumn flight schedules change: some summer flights to resorts stop and winter ones begin. So it’s best to discuss flight options with a manager, who will find direct and connecting flights from Tashkent for your dates.

The weather in transitional months is less predictable. Take a light jacket or sweater even for a beach holiday, and look out for heated pools when choosing a hotel.

Autumn with children

In autumn children are at school, but during the autumn break you can get away to warm countries. In late October and early November, the UAE, Egypt and southern Turkey are good options. Bear in mind that demand rises during school breaks, so it’s best to book a few weeks ahead. For little ones not yet at school, September is the ideal month: the sea is warm, the heat has gone and hotels are less crowded.

Short autumn trips

Autumn is great for 3–5 day trips. Istanbul, Tbilisi and Baku are warm and pleasant for walking in September and October. You can combine a city with a food program: wine tastings at wineries in Georgia, markets and street food in Istanbul.

When to book

Autumn is considered the shoulder season, and the choice of hotels is wider than in summer. But for the autumn break and the start of the UAE season, good options go faster. If your dates are fixed, start the selection a month or two before the trip.
