Who Batumi suits

Batumi is for those who want a summer by the sea without a long flight and with city life all around. You can stroll along the boulevard, have dinner in Georgian restaurants and take day trips into the mountains. Families, couples and groups who aren’t tied to the all-inclusive format choose it.

A holiday in Batumi is more of a city resort than a beach hotel on big grounds. If you want a sandy beach and hotel entertainment, Turkey or Egypt will suit you better. On the other hand, Batumi is easy to combine with Tbilisi to see the whole country in one trip.

Season

The beach season runs from June to September. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and accommodation gets pricier. September brings a warm sea and fewer people, though rain becomes more frequent. To compare Batumi with other summer destinations, see our roundup of where to go in summer.

The climate is humid subtropical, with a lot of rain, especially in autumn. May and October are lovely for walks in the Botanical Garden and the mountains. In winter the city is quiet; hotels are open, but it is not the season for the beach.

Areas

Old Batumi. The historic centre with Piazza Square, Europe Square, cafes and the market. Easy for walking, with the beach a few blocks away.

Seaside Boulevard. A long green strip along the sea with cycle paths, fountains and rides. Hotels with sea views.

New Boulevard. The southern part, with high-rise towers, large hotels and a mall. Modern and noisy.

Makhinjauri and Tsikhisdziri. Villages north of the city: quieter, with emptier beaches; you will need transport to get to the centre.

Gonio and Kvariati. Villages to the south, closer to the Turkish border. The water is cleaner and clearer, and the atmosphere is calmer.

What to see and do

The city

Batumi Boulevard with its Ferris wheel and the “Ali and Nino” sculpture, which moves in the evening. Piazza Square in Italian style. The Alphabet Tower. The Argo cable car up a hill with views of the city and the port.

Nature

The Botanical Garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi, with plants from around the world and sea views, is worth half a day. Makhuntseti Waterfall and Queen Tamar’s arched bridge in the mountains. Mountain Adjara with villages, honey farms and roads through green gorges.

History

Gonio-Apsaros Fortress, a Roman fort with excavations. Petra, the ruins of a fortress above the sea at Tsikhisdziri.

Food

Boat-shaped Adjarian khachapuri, fish from the market, local wines and churchkhela. The fish market, where the fish you pick is cooked on the spot.

How many days

For the sea, 7–10 nights. Combined with Tbilisi it usually takes 10–12 days. See a sample route around the country in our Georgia tour.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options; you can fly into Batumi, or into Tbilisi or Kutaisi and travel on to the coast. For tourist trips, citizens of Uzbekistan currently enter Georgia without a visa; check the permitted length of stay before you go.

Bring shoes for the pebbles and a light raincoat or umbrella. The sea can be rough, so watch the flags on the beach. The mountains are easier to reach with a driver or on a tour: the roads are winding.

Getting around town is easy on foot and by bike along the boulevard; for longer distances, use taxi apps. In summer the popular seafront hotels fill up early, especially for July and August. If you are travelling with kids, stay near the boulevard: it has parks, playgrounds and rides.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
