Who Sharm El Sheikh suits

Sharm is a resort for lovers of the sea and the underwater world. The reefs start right at the shore, so even without a boat you can put on a mask and see fish and coral. It is popular with couples, families with school-age children, divers and anyone who needs a warm sea in the colder months.

Hotels are mostly all-inclusive and stand as separate complexes along the coast. There is not much city life; what there is centres on Naama Bay and the Old Market. If you want a sandy beach without coral for young children, compare it with Hurghada.

Season

The sea is warm all year, but the air temperature varies. October–November and March–May are the best times: warm, sunny and a calm sea. Summer days are very hot, though the dry air is easier to bear than humidity.

From December to February, daytime temperatures are around 22–25 degrees, the water is cooler and you will need a sweater in the evening. For many travellers from Uzbekistan this is still a good winter beach option. Our list of where to go for a winter beach break will help you compare it with other destinations.

Areas and bays

Naama Bay. The centre of tourist life: a promenade, restaurants, shops and a sandy bay. Convenient for those who want to venture beyond the hotel.

Sharks Bay. Northern bays with good reefs and hotels on the hillside. Water entry is usually from a pontoon.

Nabq. The northernmost area, with large new hotels, spacious grounds and a mangrove reserve nearby. Suits families.

Ras Nasrani. Between the airport and Naama Bay, with hotels that have reefs off the shore.

Hadaba and Ras Um Sid. Farther south, closer to the Old Market, with sea-view hotels and a reef off the shore.

What to see and do

Reefs and snorkelling

Start with your hotel’s house reef. Then it is worth visiting Ras Mohammed National Park, home to some of the best reefs in the Red Sea. Boat trips to Tiran Island with swimming stops are a popular full-day outing.

Diving

Sharm has many dive centres where you can try an intro dive or take a course from scratch. Experienced divers head to the shipwrecks and walls around Ras Mohammed.

Sinai

A night climb up Mount Sinai to see the sunrise and a visit to St Catherine’s Monastery. It is a long trip, meant for physically fit travellers. There are easier options too: quad biking and a Bedouin dinner in the desert.

The town

The Old Market with spice shops and the Al Sahaba Mosque, an evening walk around Naama Bay and water parks at the larger hotels.

How many days

The standard is 7–10 nights. A week gives you time for the house reef, one boat trip and one excursion into Sinai. Divers should plan more.

A sample week in Sharm

Spend the first two days exploring the hotel’s house reef with a mask. On day three, go to Ras Mohammed by boat or by road. Days four and five: relaxing by the sea and an evening in Naama Bay. Day six: a boat trip to Tiran Island or an intro dive with an instructor. If you have the energy for the night climb up Mount Sinai, don’t schedule it for your last day: you will need rest afterwards.

Good to know

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options. Citizens of Uzbekistan should check the entry rules before travelling, as the visa procedure has changed. Tips on checking requirements are in our guide on how to find out if you need a visa.

Bring reef shoes, a mask and reef-safe sunscreen. Touching or breaking coral and taking shells is prohibited, and you can be penalised for it when leaving the country. Drink bottled water. Cash in US dollars or Egyptian pounds in small notes comes in handy on excursions and at the market.

FAQ

When is the best time to go to Sharm El Sheikh?

The most comfortable months are October, November, March, April and May: warm but without extreme heat. Winter days are sunny too, but the evenings are cool and it can be windy.

How is Sharm El Sheikh different from Hurghada?

In Sharm the reefs usually start right off the hotel's shore, which makes it better for snorkelling. Hurghada more often has a gently sloping sandy entry into the water and more city life.

Do I need special water shoes?

Yes, on many beaches you enter the water from a pontoon or over a coral seabed. Water shoes protect both your feet and the coral.

Do citizens of Uzbekistan need a visa for Egypt?

Citizens of Uzbekistan should check Egypt's entry rules before every trip, as the procedure can change. Our manager will confirm the current requirements and help with the documents.
