What Is Included in the Tour Price

Two tours to the same country at different prices may differ not in the hotel but in what's included. Here is what a package tour consists of and which costs to keep in mind.

  2. IIThe meal plan and baggage allowance depend on the option you choose

  4. IVCompare tours by what's included, not just by the final price
  5. VAsk for a breakdown of what's included before you pay

Comparing tours only by the final price is a common mistake. One option may include baggage, a private transfer and all inclusive, while another has only a flight without baggage and breakfasts. The difference becomes obvious on holiday, when you have to pay extra for every little thing.

What a package tour usually includes

Flights

Return tickets. Things to check:

  • whether the flight is direct or has a connection;
  • departure and arrival times;
  • whether checked baggage is included, and how much;
  • the carry-on allowance.

Flight times affect your holiday: a night arrival means the first day goes on recovering, and a late return flight means you may spend the last day at the hotel without a room.

Accommodation

The hotel, room category and number of nights. Note that there is usually one night fewer than days of the trip. Early check-in and late check-out are generally not included and cost extra, if available.

Meals

Depends on the option you choose: breakfast only, half board, full board or all inclusive. More in our guide to all-inclusive holidays.

Transfer

Transport from the airport to the hotel and back. It can be shared (a bus drops tourists off at several hotels) or private (a car just for you). A private transfer costs more but is faster and more comfortable, especially with children and at night.

Medical insurance

A basic policy that covers emergency medical care. Active holidays and trip cancellation usually require a separate option. Details in our guide to travel insurance.

What is usually paid separately

  • Visa, if the country requires one.
  • Tourist tax: a local accommodation tax.
  • Hotel deposit: blocked on your card and released at check-out.
  • Excursions: you can book them in advance or on the spot.
  • Drinks and à la carte restaurants, if they are not part of your meal plan.
  • Extra baggage and seat selection on the plane.
  • Cancellation insurance and extended medical cover.
  • Personal expenses: tips, souvenirs, taxis.

Tailor-made tours

If your itinerary is put together individually, it can include more: flights between cities, trains, guides, excursions, museum tickets, car hire. What’s included is agreed with you during the selection stage, which is described in our guide on how tour selection works.

How to compare offers

  1. Match up the flights: times, connections, baggage.
  2. Compare hotels on substance: location, beach, recent reviews.
  3. Check the meal plan and what exactly it includes.
  4. Look at the transfer: shared or private.
  5. Factor in mandatory charges on site.
  6. Check the cancellation terms.

Sometimes the option that looks more expensive ends up better value because it has fewer extras. How to check a hotel before paying is covered in our guide what to check before booking a hotel.

How we show the price

When a manager sends you options, each comes with a clear breakdown: what’s included, what is paid separately and which on-site costs to keep in mind. If anything is unclear, ask before paying: better to clarify in advance than to be surprised at the hotel.

Why the price can change

A tour’s price depends on seat and room availability, so it can change until the moment of booking. If an option suits you, it’s better not to put off the decision: the same offer may cost differently in a few days or no longer be available. The final price is fixed once the booking is confirmed.

Payment and documents

After booking, you receive a contract and a breakdown of services. Keep it with your vouchers: if a question comes up on site about what the meals or transfer include, you can show the document at the hotel or message us, and we’ll quickly sort it out.

FAQ

What is a package tour?

It is a ready-made set of services from a tour operator: usually flights, accommodation, transfer and medical insurance. Everything is booked together under one contract.

Is the visa included in the tour price?

Usually not: if you need a visa, it is paid for separately. In some countries the visa is arranged through the tour operator together with the tour, but even then its cost is listed as a separate line.

What is a tourist tax?

It is a local accommodation tax charged in many countries and cities. It is often paid at the hotel on check-in.

Is baggage included in the tour price?

It depends on the flight and fare. Some tours include checked baggage, others only carry-on. The allowance is stated in your flight documents.
