Best Time to Visit the Maldives

The Maldives are warm all year round and the sea is always warm. The difference between seasons lies in rainfall, wind and prices, and it's worth understanding before you book a villa.

  2. IIFrom May to October rain and wind are more frequent, but prices are lower
  3. IIINew Year dates are the most expensive and in demand
  4. IVSurfing and big marine life each have their own seasons
  5. VYour choice of atoll and villa type matters more than the month

In the Maldives, almost everything depends on the resort you choose: a private island, an overwater or beach villa, a reef right by the shore or further away. The month affects the weather and the price, but there are no bad months here: air and water temperatures barely change throughout the year.

Dry season: December to April

This is the period of the northeast monsoon, which brings dry, sunny weather. The sea is calm, the water is clear and visibility for snorkeling and diving is excellent. Demand peaks in these months, so prices are higher and popular resorts are booked well in advance.

The very peak is the New Year holidays. If you want to celebrate New Year in the Maldives, start planning several months ahead: villas for these dates go fast, and many resorts apply holiday terms with a minimum length of stay.

Wet season: May to October

With the southwest monsoon come more clouds, wind and tropical downpours. Usually the rain passes within an hour or two, and then the sun shines again. There can also be several overcast days in a row, so be prepared for that.

The upside of this period is more affordable prices and fewer people at the resorts. For a honeymoon focused on the villa, spa and dinners, it can be a sensible choice. Many couples go precisely in summer; read about options for newlyweds in our honeymoon guide.

Shoulder months

November and late April to May are considered transitional. The weather is less predictable then, but often pleasant, and prices haven’t yet peaked or are already falling.

The right season for your interests

Snorkeling and diving

Visibility is better in the dry season. Different atolls have spots where you can see manta rays, turtles and whale sharks, but the timing depends on the side of the atoll and the currents. If this matters to you, tell the manager in advance: we’ll look for a resort with a good house reef and the right location.

Surfing

Surfing waves are more common in the wet season, so surfers go in summer.

A calm beach holiday

If you want a calm sea and sunshine, January to April is ideal.

Getting there and what to keep in mind

The international airport is next to the capital, Malé, and from there you get to your resort by speedboat, domestic flight or seaplane. The transfer type depends on how far the island is and has a big effect on the total cost, so compare resorts including the transfer, not just the villa price.

Seaplanes only fly in daylight. If your flight lands late in the evening, you may need a night at a hotel near the airport.

Flights from Tashkent to the Maldives usually have a connection. A manager will find flight options for your dates.

How many nights and which meal plan

6–8 nights is ideal. Since you can only eat at your resort, the meal plan matters a lot: on many islands it’s better value to take half board, full board or all inclusive from the start. Read more about the formats in our guide to all-inclusive holidays.

What to choose if your dates are fixed

If you can only take time off in summer, don’t give up on the Maldives. Choose a resort with good reviews for service on rainy days: a spa, indoor restaurants, activities for children. It helps if the house reef is within walking distance of your villa, so you can use even a short sunny window for snorkeling. And the money you save in the off-season can go towards a higher villa category or a better meal plan.

Local islands

Besides resorts on private islands, the Maldives have guesthouses on islands where local people live. This kind of holiday is usually more affordable, but local rules apply: designated beaches for tourists, restrictions on alcohol and modest dress away from the beach. It’s a good option for those who want to see a different side of the Maldives.

FAQ

What is the best month for the Maldives?

The most stable weather is usually from January to April: little rain, calm sea and good underwater visibility. It's also the most expensive period, apart from the New Year holidays.

Is it worth going to the Maldives in summer?

Yes, if you're ready for short showers and wind. There are still plenty of sunny hours in summer, and villa prices are often noticeably lower than in winter.

When is the rainy season in the Maldives?

The wet season of the southwest monsoon lasts roughly from May to October. Rain usually comes in downpours, after which the sun comes out again.

How many nights should I book in the Maldives?

Most people book 6–8 nights. Fewer isn't great value given the long journey, and more is a matter of budget and how much you enjoy a quiet holiday.
