Who South Korea is for

Korea is popular with young couples and groups of friends who follow Korean culture, music and cosmetics. But the country also appeals to those far from K-pop: excellent museums, ancient mountain temples, easy-to-visit national parks and great food. Families with children will enjoy the theme parks and aquariums.

Korea is safe, transport runs like clockwork, and the cities are easy to explore on your own. Many people from Uzbekistan also have relatives and friends here, and the trip is often combined with a visit to them.

Seasons: when to go

Spring is the main season: in late March and early April the cherry trees bloom, especially beautifully in Seoul, Gyeongju and on Jeju. Autumn, from October to mid-November, is the time of maples and ginkgo, warm days and cool evenings. It is the best period for mountain hikes.

Summer is hot and humid, with monsoon rains from late June through July. Winter in Seoul is frosty and dry, and the ski resorts are open. For seasonal ideas, see where to go in spring and where to go in autumn.

Cities and regions

Seoul

Seoul offers Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong with its teahouses, the shopping districts of Myeongdong and Hongdae, Gangnam and N Seoul Tower on Namsan. From here you can take a day trip to the Demilitarized Zone.

Busan

The country’s second city, by the sea: Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches, Jagalchi fish market, colourful Gamcheon Culture Village and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple on the rocks. It is about 2.5–3 hours from Seoul by KTX.

Gyeongju

The ancient capital of the Silla kingdom, with burial mounds, Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto. It pairs well with Busan.

Jeju

A volcanic island with Mount Hallasan, the Seongsan Ilchulbong crater, waterfalls and tea plantations. People come here for 3–4 days, ideally with a car or a driver.

What to see

  • The changing of the guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace, which you can watch in a hanbok.
  • The evening view over Seoul from N Seoul Tower.
  • Gamcheon Village and Jagalchi Market in Busan.
  • Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju.
  • Sunrise on the Seongsan Ilchulbong crater on Jeju.

Food and shopping

Korean food is worth a trip of its own: kimchi, bibimbap, Korean barbecue, tteokbokki and street food at Gwangjang and Myeongdong markets. For Muslims, Seoul has halal restaurants, especially in Itaewon near the Central Mosque.

Shopping is a common reason for the trip. Cosmetics are sold in chain stores on every corner, and tourists can claim a tax refund on purchases above a certain amount. Designer boutiques and malls are concentrated in Gangnam, Myeongdong and Seongsu, and for affordable clothing head to Dongdaemun Market.

How many days to plan

Seoul alone with trips around the area takes 4–5 days. The classic Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan route takes 8–9 days. With Jeju Island, 10–12 days. If you are going for cosmetics and shopping, set aside a separate day without sightseeing.

Entry and practical tips

Citizens of Uzbekistan need a visa for a tourist trip, and it must be arranged in advance. Preparing the documents is the most important part of the trip, as the requirements for proof of funds and the purpose of the visit are strict. The process is covered in detail in our guide to the South Korea visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.

Bank cards and T-money transport cards, which you top up in convenience stores, are handy for paying in Korea. For navigation, locals use Korean map apps: the maps you are used to work worse here, so download a local app in advance.

In Seoul it is best to choose a hotel near the metro, for example in Myeongdong, Hongdae or Gangnam, as this decides how much time you spend getting around each day.
