For most people in Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia means Umrah to Mecca and Medina first of all. But the country is also open to regular tourism: AlUla, Jeddah and the Red Sea.

best time
November to February has the most comfortable climate; Umrah is performed all year, with the peak in Ramadan
highlights
The main travellers from Uzbekistan are pilgrims going to perform Umrah: families, elderly parents with their grown-up children, and groups from the mahalla. What matters most to them is how close the hotel is to the mosque, easy logistics between Mecca and Medina, and an escort.
A second group has appeared recently: travellers who want to see AlUla, old Jeddah, Riyadh and the Red Sea beaches. It is a destination for those who have already been to the UAE and are looking for something new in the region.
The most comfortable climate is from November to February: warm days and cool nights, especially in Medina and AlUla. From May to September Mecca and Riyadh are very hot, above 40 degrees during the day, so summer is harder for older pilgrims.
Umrah in Ramadan is especially precious for believers, but it is the busiest period: hotels around the mosques fill up early and cost more. During the Hajj season, Umrah is not performed by foreigners and entry to Mecca is restricted.
Mecca is home to Masjid al-Haram with the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam. This is where the Umrah rites are performed: tawaf, and sa’i between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Entry to Mecca is permitted only to Muslims. The key choice when booking is the distance from the hotel to the mosque and the view from the window.
Medina is the City of the Prophet, with the Prophet’s Mosque, where his grave is located, and Quba Mosque. The atmosphere here is calmer than in Mecca. The high-speed Haramain train runs between the two cities. More about the cities on our Mecca and Medina page.
A desert region in the north-west with the Nabataean city of Hegra, tombs carved into the rocks, the mirror-walled Maraya concert hall and Elephant Rock. There are desert hotels here, and festivals are held in the cool season.
A port city on the Red Sea with the old Al-Balad district of coral-stone houses with wooden balconies, a waterfront and a fountain. Jeddah is the gateway for pilgrims, and many add a day or two here to their Umrah.
The capital, with the historic Diriyah district, the Kingdom Centre and Al Faisaliah towers, and a huge entertainment season in winter.
The main criterion is the distance to the mosque. Hotels right next to the Haram cost more, but let you attend every prayer and rest in between. This is especially important for older pilgrims. Hotels further away are cheaper, but you’ll have to walk or take a shuttle to the mosque, which takes time on peak dates.
The same principle applies in Medina: the closer to the Prophet’s Mosque, the more convenient. Pay attention to meals: some hotels offer breakfast, others full board. There are many cafés and restaurants around the mosques with different cuisines, including Uzbek and Turkish.
Umrah takes 10–14 days, usually split equally between Mecca and Medina. A tourist trip with AlUla and Jeddah takes 6–8 days. If you combine Umrah with a visit to Jeddah, add 2 days. Preparation is covered in detail in our guide to Umrah from Uzbekistan.
Umrah and tourism use different visas, and the rules for issuing them have changed in recent years. Before the pilgrimage, check the requirements for documents and vaccinations, as they may be mandatory. The tourist visa procedure for citizens of Uzbekistan needs to be checked separately.

The pilgrimage requires a visa that allows you to perform Umrah; it is arranged before the trip, usually together with a service package. The issuing rules and validity periods change, so check them when booking.
Umrah can be performed throughout the year except during the days of Hajj. The most sought-after and expensive period is the month of Ramadan, while from November to February the climate in Mecca and Medina is milder.
Usually 10–14 days, with the time split between Mecca and Medina. There are also shorter one-week programmes, but many prefer not to rush.
Yes, in recent years the country has opened up to tourism: AlUla, Jeddah, Riyadh and the Red Sea resorts. Our manager will check the tourist visa procedure for citizens of Uzbekistan separately.
