Who Greece is for

Greece is a summer destination for those who want a seaside holiday in Europe. Families choose Crete, Rhodes and Halkidiki, with plenty of hotels with meals included and kids’ clubs. Couples head to Santorini and Mykonos for the views and romance, and history lovers to Athens, Delphi and Mycenae.

Greece also suits those who like island hopping: ferries link the islands, and in a week you can see two or three very different places. Other summer options are collected in where to go in summer.

Seasons: when to go

The beach season runs from June to September, and on the southern islands from late May to mid-October. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, and the meltemi wind blows on the islands, which takes the edge off the heat but can stir up waves. June and September are considered the best months: the sea is warm and there are fewer people.

For sightseeing trips to Athens and the mainland, April, May and October are good. In winter many resort hotels on the islands are closed.

Islands and regions

Crete

Crete is the largest Greek island. It has the Balos lagoon, the pink beach of Elafonisi, the Palace of Knossos, the Samaria Gorge and the towns of Chania and Rethymno. You can easily spend a week or more here: the island is varied and great for exploring by car.

Santorini

A volcanic island with white houses above the caldera, sunsets in Oia and wineries. It suits couples, but keep in mind that it is very crowded in summer.

Rhodes, Corfu, Kos

Rhodes has the medieval town of the Knights and beaches on both sides of the island. Corfu is a green island with Venetian architecture. Kos is a quiet island for family holidays.

Athens and the mainland

Athens has the Acropolis, the Plaka and the National Archaeological Museum. From Athens people travel to Delphi, Cape Sounion and Meteora, with its monasteries on top of the rocks.

Halkidiki

A peninsula in the north with three “fingers”: Kassandra for an active holiday, Sithonia for nature, and Mount Athos, a monastic republic open only to men with a special permit.

What to see

  • The Acropolis early in the morning or close to closing time.
  • Sunset in Oia on Santorini.
  • The Balos lagoon and Elafonisi on Crete.
  • The monasteries of Meteora.
  • The old town of Rhodes.

Greek food and accommodation

Greek salad is called horiatiki here, and it always comes with a slab of feta on top. Try moussaka, souvlaki, fresh grilled fish at a seaside taverna, and yoghurt with honey for dessert. Island tavernas are the best place for dinner, often with a sunset view.

Accommodation in Greece ranges from large resort hotels with meals included on Crete and Rhodes to small family guesthouses on Santorini and Naxos. Santorini hotels with caldera views cost more, and the beaches on that island are on the other side. Many island hotels are only open from April to October.

How many days to plan

A beach holiday on one island takes 7–10 nights. Athens plus an island takes 9–11 days, with 2–3 days being enough for Athens. A multi-island tour by ferry takes 10 days or more. If you are after a similar climate but different visa rules, take a look at Cyprus.
