Crete: Greece's largest island

Crete means beaches with turquoise water, mountain gorges, Minoan palaces and Venetian harbours. The island is so big that the region you choose shapes your whole holiday.

Who Crete suits

Crete suits families with kids, couples, hikers and history lovers. It is a European beach holiday with Greek food, olive groves and mountain villages. Hotels vary widely, from large resorts with pools and entertainment to small family-run guesthouses by the sea.

If you are used to holidays in Turkey and want to try Greece, Crete is an easy place to start: plenty of hotels with meal plans, familiar resort facilities and yet a completely different atmosphere.

When to go

The beach season runs from May to October. June and September are the best months: a warm sea, moderate heat and fewer tourists than in high summer. July and August are hot and crowded, and the north coast is often hit by the meltemi wind, which whips up waves.

May and October suit sightseeing, hiking and a quiet holiday, though the water may be cool. In winter many resort hotels close. A roundup of beach destinations by season is in our guide to beach holidays from Tashkent.

Where to stay

Heraklion and around

The island’s capital and main airport. The city itself isn’t ideal for a beach holiday, but there are resort areas nearby, and the Palace of Knossos is just a few kilometres away. A convenient base for excursions.

Hersonissos and Malia

The busiest part of the north coast: lots of hotels, water parks, restaurants and nightlife in Malia. For families, hotels outside the centres of these villages are a better fit.

Elounda and Agios Nikolaos

The east of the island, with high-end hotels, quiet coves and views of Spinalonga. A choice for couples and a relaxed family holiday.

Chania

The west of the island: a Venetian harbour, old quarters and good restaurants. It is the closest base to the most famous beaches: Balos, Falassarna and Elafonissi.

Rethymno

A town between Heraklion and Chania with a long beach and an old fortress. Convenient if you want to see both the east and the west.

What to see

  • The Palace of Knossos. The ruins of a Minoan palace linked to the myth of the Minotaur. It is best visited with a guide or an audio guide, followed by the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.
  • Balos Lagoon. A shallow turquoise lagoon on a peninsula. Reach it by boat from Kissamos or by car along a dirt road.
  • Elafonissi. A beach with pinkish sand and shallow water, good for kids.
  • Samaria Gorge. A long hike through a national park for those who are fit, open in the warm season.
  • Spinalonga. An island with a Venetian fortress near Elounda.
  • The old harbour of Chania with its lighthouse and evening tavernas.
  • The Lasithi Plateau and the Cave of Zeus.

How many days to plan

  • 7–8 days: one region and 2–3 excursions.
  • 10–14 days: two bases, such as Hersonissos and Chania, to see the east and the west.
  • For a Mediterranean comparison, consider another island, Cyprus, where Limassol has a similar season.

Good to know

You need a Schengen visa. Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Flights from Tashkent are with a transfer or on seasonal charter programmes; our manager will find direct and connecting options.

Renting a car is the easiest way to explore the island: buses link the towns, but beaches and villages are harder to reach. Mountain roads are narrow and winding. Greece charges a tourist tax, paid at the hotel.

Cretan cuisine

Cretan food is among the healthiest in the Mediterranean: olive oil, vegetables, cheese, herbs and honey. Try dakos, a rusk topped with tomato and cheese, lamb with herbs, Cretan-style snails and kalitsounia pies. In mountain villages, tavernas often cook with their own produce. Many places bring a free dessert or fruit at the end of the meal. Pork is common, so check what dishes contain; halal options are easier to find at hotels.
