Who France is for

France attracts honeymooners, art and architecture lovers, and families with children who dream of Disneyland Paris. For some it is about shopping in Paris, for others food and wine in Bordeaux and Burgundy, and for others the sea and yachts of the Riviera.

It is a destination for a first trip to Europe. Even if you have seen the Eiffel Tower in a thousand photos, Paris feels different in person. If you are choosing between countries, see our guide to sightseeing tours of Europe.

Seasons: when to go

Spring and early autumn are the best time for cities and regions: comfortable weather, parks in bloom and shorter museum queues. Summer is the season for the Riviera and Provence, with lavender blooming in late June and July. In August many French people go on holiday, and some small places in the cities close.

Winter in Paris is cool and rainy, but you get Christmas markets, the January sales and skiing in the Alps. Book New Year dates early.

Regions

Paris and around

Paris offers the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, Notre-Dame, Montmartre, the Marais and the Champs-Élysées. Versailles, Disneyland and Fontainebleau are nearby. Allow at least 4 days for Paris so you’re not rushing between museums.

The French Riviera

Nice with the Promenade des Anglais and its old town, Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Tropez and the neighbouring principality of Monaco. In summer it is a beach holiday with walks through medieval villages such as Èze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Provence

Avignon with the Palace of the Popes, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, the lavender fields of the Valensole plateau and the villages of the Luberon. It is easiest to travel by car.

The Loire Valley and Normandy

The châteaux of Chambord, Chenonceau and Amboise make a day trip from Paris or a 2–3 day route. Normandy has the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, Étretat with its white cliffs, and Honfleur.

What to see

  • The Louvre and the view over Paris from Montmartre.
  • The Palace of Versailles and its gardens.
  • Mont-Saint-Michel at high tide.
  • Old Nice and the lookout on Castle Hill.
  • The Valensole lavender fields in summer.

Where to stay in Paris

Your neighbourhood shapes your impression of Paris. Saint-Germain and the Latin Quarter are the classic Left Bank with cafés and bookshops. The Marais has old mansions, galleries and shops. The Opéra area is handy for shopping at Galeries Lafayette. Montmartre is atmospheric, but hilly and far from the centre.

Rooms in Parisian hotels are smaller than you may be used to, especially in old buildings. The metro covers the whole city, and many sights are within walking distance. French food is a story of its own: croissants from the bakery in the morning, cheeses, desserts and dinner at a bistro.

How many days to plan

A first trip takes 5–7 days in Paris with Versailles and a trip to Normandy or the Loire châteaux. Paris and the sea take 9–10 days, travelling by high-speed train or flying to Nice. France is often combined with Italy, as Nice is close to the Italian border.

Entry and practical tips

Citizens of Uzbekistan need a Schengen visa to travel to France. You apply through the visa centre, the requirements for proof of funds, hotel bookings and insurance are strict, and processing takes longer in high season. Details are in our guide to the Schengen visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.

In Paris, keep an eye on your belongings in the metro and at tourist spots, as pickpockets are active. Museums such as the Louvre require a timed-entry booking.
