Who Spain is for

Spain is for those who want both the sea and a cultural programme. Families with children choose coasts with gently sloping beaches and the PortAventura theme park, couples go for Barcelona and Andalusia, and groups of friends for the nightlife and food. Football fans come for matches in Madrid and Barcelona.

Spain has hot, sunny summers and warm autumns, which makes it one of the best European destinations for a seaside holiday. If you are choosing between countries for summer, take a look at where to go in summer.

Seasons: when to go

Spring and autumn are best for sightseeing. In May and June it is already warm, and in September the sea is still warm and there are fewer tourists. July and August are peak season on the coasts, and Madrid and Seville get very hot at that time.

Winter in Barcelona and Valencia is mild, around 12–15 degrees, and in the Canary Islands you can sunbathe. In spring Seville hosts Holy Week and the April Fair, colourful but crowded events.

Regions

Barcelona and Catalonia

Barcelona offers the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and city beaches. Nearby are the Costa Brava and Costa Daurada resorts, Montserrat Monastery and Girona.

Madrid

The capital, with the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, the Royal Palace and Retiro Park. From Madrid people make trips to Toledo and Segovia.

Andalusia

The Alhambra in Granada, Seville with its cathedral and Alcázar, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, the white villages and Ronda above its gorge. The Costa del Sol, with Málaga and Marbella, means beaches and resorts.

Valencia

The City of Arts and Sciences, paella in its birthplace, wide beaches and a mild climate, which makes it convenient for families.

The islands

Mallorca and Ibiza in the Balearics offer beaches, coves and resort life in summer. Tenerife and Gran Canaria in the Canaries offer volcanoes, the ocean and warmth all year round.

What to see

  • The Sagrada Família, with a ticket bought in advance.
  • The Alhambra in Granada; tickets must be booked well ahead.
  • Plaza de España and the Alcázar in Seville.
  • Toledo, the city of three cultures.
  • The Teide volcano on Tenerife.

Spanish food

Food is a big part of a Spanish holiday. Tapas are small plates you order several of at once. Seafood paella is best in Valencia, jamón is everywhere, gazpacho is a cold tomato soup for hot days, and churros with chocolate are for breakfast. In the Basque Country, in San Sebastián, the small bites are called pintxos, and the city is one of Europe’s top food capitals.

Pork appears often in Spanish cooking, so ask about ingredients if you need to. Barcelona and Madrid have restaurants with halal menus, and seafood and fish are on menus everywhere.

How many days to plan

Barcelona and the sea take 8–10 days: 3–4 days in the city and a week on the coast. Andalusia takes 7–9 days, moving between Seville, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga. Spain can be combined with Italy or Portugal, but then plan for two weeks.

Entry and practical tips

Citizens of Uzbekistan need a Schengen visa to travel to Spain. Documents are submitted through the visa centre, and the order of your route matters: your main country is the one where you spend the most nights. More in our guide to the Schengen visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.

Spain runs on a late schedule: lunch is after two and dinner after nine in the evening. In Barcelona, keep an eye on your bags in tourist areas. Many cities charge a tourist tax at the hotel.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
