The Czech Republic is a compact country for your first trip to Europe: medieval Prague, the spa town of Karlovy Vary and fairy-tale towns within a couple of hours' drive.

best time
April to June and September to October; December for the Christmas markets
highlights
The Czech Republic is a good choice for a first trip to Europe: the country is small, Prague is compact and walkable, and you feel the old-town atmosphere at every step. Couples come for romantic weekends, families come too, older travellers come for spa treatments in Karlovy Vary, and groups of friends come for Prague’s streets and food.
The Czech Republic is also a handy starting point for travelling around Central Europe. Vienna, Budapest and Dresden are a few hours away by train. Route ideas are in our guide to sightseeing tours of Europe.
The best time is spring and early autumn. In April and May the gardens below Prague Castle are in bloom, and in September and October the weather is warm and the parks turn gold. Summer is warm, but Prague is packed with tourists, especially around Charles Bridge.
Winter is cold and sometimes snowy, but December is the season of Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Prague is popular at New Year, so book hotels early; for other ideas, see where to go for New Year.
Prague offers Prague Castle with St. Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with the astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Malá Strana and Vyšehrad. In the evening, take a walk along the Vltava embankment or climb Petřín Hill.
A spa town with colonnades and thermal springs, known for its treatment programmes. People come here on a day trip from Prague or for a week of wellness at a sanatorium.
A small medieval town on a bend of the river with a castle on the rock, listed by UNESCO. It is worth staying the night to see the town without the tour groups.
Kutná Hora with St. Barbara’s Cathedral and the Sedlec Ossuary, and the Gothic castle of Karlštejn, are popular half-day trips from Prague.
A national park with sandstone rocks and the Pravčická Gate. It suits anyone who wants walks in nature.
In Prague it is most convenient to stay in the Old Town, Malá Strana or the New Town, with the main sights within walking distance. Vinohrady is a little further out but calmer and has good cafés. Hotels in historic buildings often have no lift and narrow staircases, which is worth bearing in mind if you travel with big luggage.
Czech food is hearty: goulash with dumplings, roast pork knuckle, duck with cabbage, and trdelník, a sweet pastry sold on every corner. If you don’t eat pork, there is almost always beef, chicken and fish on the menu, and Prague also has halal restaurants.
Prague alone takes 3–4 days. Prague with trips to Karlovy Vary, Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov takes 6–7 days. A Prague, Vienna and Budapest combination takes 8–10 days. A spa course in Karlovy Vary starts at 7 days, depending on the sanatorium’s programme.
Citizens of Uzbekistan need a Schengen visa to travel to the Czech Republic. Documents are submitted through the visa centre, and you’ll need proof of funds, accommodation bookings and insurance. For details on preparing, see our guide to the Schengen visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.
The Czech Republic has its own currency, the Czech koruna, so compare rates and avoid exchange offices with poor terms in the centre. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.
