Who Langkawi suits

Langkawi is an island for those who want the sea and nature without noisy parties. Couples come here, including for a honeymoon, as do families with kids and travellers who are tired of cities and want peace after the capital. There is little nightlife; the entertainment is the beach, the jungle, boat trips and sunsets.

The island is Muslim, so food is easy: halal cafes are everywhere. At the same time, the resort areas are used to foreigners, and swimwear on the beach is the norm.

When to go

The dry season runs from November to April, and the best months are December to March: sunny, with a calm and clearer sea. From May to October it is the rainy season. Showers are usually short, but there are overcast days and waves, and some boat trips get cancelled.

Langkawi is a natural choice if you are deciding where to go for a winter beach holiday: in January it is hot here, and the season lines up with the Uzbek school holidays.

Where to stay

Pantai Cenang

The island’s liveliest beach. Cafes, shops, a night market and an aquarium nearby. Convenient if you want to go out in the evening without depending on taxis. The sand is soft and the entry into the water is gentle.

Pantai Tengah

The beach next to Cenang, but quieter. A good compromise for families: Cenang’s restaurants are five minutes away, while it stays calm by the hotel.

Tanjung Rhu and the north

The north of the island has stand-alone resort hotels in bays with views of limestone cliffs. Chosen for a secluded holiday or a honeymoon. Restaurants and excursions are further away, so you will need taxis or a rental car.

Datai

A jungle bay in the north-west with a few high-end hotels. Silence, rainforest right outside your room, monkeys and hornbills. Suits those happy to barely leave the hotel.

What to see and do

  • Langkawi Cable Car and SkyBridge. A ride up Mount Mat Cincang with views of the sea and, on clear days, the islands of Thailand. Go in the morning: clouds often roll in by lunchtime.
  • Kilim mangroves. A boat trip through channels between the cliffs, bat caves and eagle feeding. One of the island’s most interesting excursions.
  • Island hopping. A half-day boat tour: the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden on Dayang Bunting island, eagle feeding and a swim at a small beach.
  • Seven Wells Waterfall. A cascade of natural pools in the jungle where you can swim. There are stairs to climb, so wear comfortable shoes.
  • Kuah. The island’s main town, with Eagle Square and duty-free shops.

How many days to plan

Six to eight days is enough for Langkawi on its own. The most popular format is a combined trip: 3–4 days in Kuala Lumpur, then a week on the island. That way the trip turns into neither endless shopping nor a monotonous beach stay.

Good to know

There is almost no public transport on the island. People get around by taxi via an app or rent a car; traffic drives on the left.

Some beaches get jellyfish in certain months. Ask at reception about the current situation and swim where there are lifeguards.

Langkawi is a duty-free zone, so chocolate, some drinks and other goods are cheaper than on the mainland. Even so, big shopping is easier in the capital.

Entry follows Malaysia’s general rules. Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Food and evenings on the island

Langkawi’s evenings revolve around the night markets: each day the market sets up in a different village, and there you can try satay, grilled fish, nasi lemak and fresh juices. At the restaurants on Cenang beach you can dine at sunset right on the sand. Many hotels in the northern bays are isolated, so when choosing one, check in advance whether there are cafes nearby or whether you will be eating only at the hotel. Beaches with facilities suit families better; secluded bays suit couples.
