Barcelona: Gaudi architecture and the Mediterranean

Barcelona combines what rarely comes together in one city: world-class architecture, city beaches and a warm sea. You can tick off the sights or simply live in it for a week.

Who Barcelona suits

Barcelona suits almost everyone: couples, families with kids, groups of friends, architecture lovers and football fans. Its biggest strength is the two-in-one format: a museum or cathedral in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, dinner in the old quarter at night.

If you are deciding where to go in summer and want both the sea and city life, Barcelona is one of the most balanced options in Spain. Kids will love the aquarium, the amusement park on Mount Tibidabo and the science museum.

When to go

May, June, September and early October are the best times: it is warm, you can swim from June until late September, and there are fewer crowds than in high summer. July and August are hot, busy and expensive, but they are the most reliable months for a beach holiday.

Winters are mild, around 10–15°C during the day, with a cold sea. It is a good season for sightseeing without queues. In late September the city celebrates its main festival, La Mercè, with concerts and human towers.

Where to stay

Eixample

A district of wide streets, modernist buildings and the Passeig de Gràcia boulevard. Gaudi’s houses are within walking distance and the old town is close. A convenient and safe choice for a first visit.

The Gothic Quarter and El Born

Medieval lanes, the cathedral, the Picasso Museum, bars and restaurants. Very atmospheric, but noisy at night, and rooms in old buildings are small.

Barceloneta and Port Olímpic

Stay by the sea. Step straight onto the beach in the morning and enjoy seafood restaurants in the evening. Good for a summer holiday focused on the sea.

Gràcia

A former village inside the city: squares, cafes and local life. Quieter and cosier than the centre, good for couples and repeat visitors.

The coast outside the city

Sitges, Calella or the Costa Brava resorts for a family beach holiday with train trips into Barcelona.

What to see

  • Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s masterpiece. Inside, the stained glass fills the space with coloured light, so time your visit by the sun: morning for blues and greens, evening for reds and oranges.
  • Park Guell. Mosaic benches and a view over the city.
  • Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). Gaudi’s residential buildings on Passeig de Gràcia.
  • The Gothic Quarter. The cathedral, Plaça del Rei and old lanes.
  • La Boqueria market off La Rambla.
  • Montjuïc. A hill with a fortress, the Museum of Catalan Art and the Magic Fountain.
  • Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s stadium; check whether it is open for tours on your dates.
  • Montserrat. A monastery in jagged mountains an hour away, worth a separate day.

How many days to plan

  • 4–5 days: Gaudi’s main buildings, the old town, Montjuïc and the beach.
  • 7 days: add Montserrat, Girona or Sitges and time by the sea.
  • 10–14 days: Barcelona and Madrid, or a combination with Paris.

Good to know

You need a Schengen visa. Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Flights from Tashkent: our manager will find direct and connecting options. The city charges a tourist tax, paid at check-in.

Pickpockets are a well-known problem in Barcelona, especially on La Rambla, on the metro and at the beaches. Don’t leave your things unattended and keep your bag zipped. People eat lunch late here and dinner after 9 pm, and many restaurants close for a break in the afternoon.

Food in Barcelona

Catalan food means tapas, seafood paella, bread with tomato, jamón and crema catalana for dessert. Pork is common, but fish and vegetable tapas are easy to order. Locals eat paella at lunch, not dinner, and it is best to choose restaurants away from La Rambla. For a tasty and affordable bite, head to the Boqueria and Santa Caterina markets. Many cafes offer a set lunch menu with a starter, main and dessert at a fixed price.
