Tajikistan tours: Pamirs, Fann Mountains and Dushanbe

Tajikistan is the most mountainous country in Central Asia, with high roads, turquoise lakes and village hospitality. We plan 4x4 journeys and treks for travellers who want real wilderness with reliable logistics.

Why visit Tajikistan

Tajikistan is for travellers who want mountains above everything else. Peaks rise over 7,000 metres in the Pamirs, roads climb to high passes, and villages sit in green oases along rivers. The culture is distinct from its Turkic neighbours: Tajik is a Persian language, and in the Pamirs people speak their own languages and live in traditional houses built around a central skylight.

It is also one of the least crowded destinations in the region. Infrastructure is simpler than in Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan, which is exactly why careful planning of vehicles, drivers and overnight stops makes such a difference here.

Where to go

Dushanbe

The capital is green, calm and easy to explore in a day: Rudaki Avenue, the National Museum, the Museum of Antiquities and the Mehrgon market. The Hissar fortress is a short drive west of the city. See our Dushanbe page.

Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul

North of Dushanbe, the Fann Mountains offer the best trekking access in the country, with dozens of lakes and rocky peaks. Iskanderkul and the Seven Lakes of the Marguzor valley can be reached by car, while the Alauddin and Kulikalon lakes reward multi-day hikes. Our Tajikistan: Fann Mountains program covers this area.

Penjikent and the Zerafshan valley

Close to the border with Uzbekistan, Penjikent has the ruins of an ancient Sogdian town and nearby Sarazm, one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia. It is the natural link between Samarkand and the Fann Mountains.

The Pamirs

The Pamir Highway is one of the great road journeys of Asia. Most routes go from Dushanbe to Khorog, through the Wakhan valley along the Afghan border, onto the high plateau at Murghab and across into Kyrgyzstan towards Osh.

How many days

  • 5–6 days: Dushanbe, Iskanderkul and the Seven Lakes.
  • 7–9 days: add a Fann Mountains trek or Penjikent and Samarkand.
  • 10–14 days: the Pamir Highway with the Wakhan valley.

When to go

The Fann Mountains and Iskanderkul are best from June to September. The high Pamirs have a short season: July to September is the most reliable period, when passes are open and the Wakhan valley is green. Dushanbe is pleasant in spring and autumn and very hot in mid-summer.

Getting around and entry

Within Tajikistan we use 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers, especially for the Pamirs, where fuel stops, road conditions and altitude need planning. International flights arrive in Dushanbe; from Tashkent our team selects direct or connecting flights. Overland crossings with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan exist, but their status changes, as explained in our guide to border crossings in Central Asia.

Most visitors use an e-visa, and a separate permit is needed for Gorno-Badakhshan. Accommodation outside Dushanbe is mostly guesthouses and homestays with simple facilities. Card payments are rarely accepted outside the capital, so carry enough cash, and expect mobile coverage to be patchy in the mountains.

Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.

FAQ

Do I need a permit for the Pamirs?

Yes, travel in the Gorno-Badakhshan region requires a special permit in addition to your visa or e-visa. We arrange it as part of the program; the procedure can change, so we check it for each trip.

How many days does the Pamir Highway take?

Plan at least seven to ten days for the Pamir Highway between Dushanbe and Osh, including the Wakhan valley. Fewer days mean very long drives at high altitude.

Can I combine Tajikistan with Uzbekistan?

Yes. The Fann Mountains and Penjikent are close to Samarkand, and many travellers combine the two countries. Land crossings depend on current border rules, so we confirm the option for your dates.

Is Tajikistan suitable for non-trekkers?

Yes. Iskanderkul, the Seven Lakes road and much of the Pamir Highway are reachable by car. Altitude is still a factor, so the pace matters.
