Why go to the Fann Mountains

The Fann Mountains sit between the Zerafshan and Hissar ranges, and pack an extraordinary number of lakes and peaks into a small area. Several summits rise above 5,000 metres, and the lakes below them range from deep blue to bright turquoise. Villages in the valleys still live from farming and herding, and hosts often welcome trekkers with bread, tea and dried fruit.

It is the most accessible mountain area in Tajikistan, both from Dushanbe and from Samarkand in Uzbekistan, which makes it ideal for travellers who want real mountains without the long drives of the Pamirs.

What to see

Seven Lakes (Haft Kul)

In the Marguzor valley, a road runs past a chain of seven lakes, each a different colour. You can drive to the upper lakes and walk between them, staying in village homestays. It is a perfect introduction for non-trekkers.

Alauddin lakes

A cluster of clear lakes surrounded by pine trees and peaks, reached on foot from the Artuch area. They are the base for routes over the Alauddin and Chimtarga passes, the latter one of the higher passes in the range.

Kulikalon lakes

A wide basin with several lakes under the rocky wall of the Chimtarga massif. It is linked to the Alauddin lakes by a pass and is a highlight of most multi-day treks.

Iskanderkul

On the northern edge of the range, this lake is reachable by road and is covered on our Iskanderkul page.

Penjikent

The town on the western edge has the ruins of ancient Panjakent, a Sogdian city, and the archaeological site of Sarazm nearby. It is the natural stopover between Samarkand and the mountains.

Trekking levels

  • Easy: car-supported visits to the Seven Lakes and Iskanderkul with short walks.
  • Moderate: day hikes to the Alauddin lakes and a night in a tent or camp.
  • Demanding: multi-day treks over high passes linking Alauddin, Kulikalon and other lakes.

Our guide to trekking in Central Asia covers fitness, equipment and safety.

How many days

  • 2–3 days: Seven Lakes and Iskanderkul by car.
  • 5–6 days: add a short trek to the Alauddin lakes, as in our Tajikistan: Fann Mountains program.
  • 7–10 days: a full trek across several passes.

Best season

June to September. July and August give the most stable conditions on high passes. In June, snow may still cover higher routes, and in late September nights are cold. Lower villages are pleasant in May and October.

How to get there

From Dushanbe, the road north through the Anzob tunnel reaches the range in a few hours. From the west, Penjikent is close to Samarkand, and travellers have used the land crossing between the two when it is open to foreigners. Our team checks the current border situation and arranges transport on both sides.

Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.

Where it fits in a route

The Fann Mountains connect the Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan with the mountains of Tajikistan: Samarkand, Penjikent, the Seven Lakes, Iskanderkul and on to Dushanbe. They also work as a short mountain add-on to a classic Uzbekistan tour.
