Iskanderkul: Alexander's lake in the Fann Mountains

Iskanderkul is a turquoise mountain lake on the northern edge of the Fann Mountains, reachable by road from Dushanbe. It is the easiest way to see high mountain scenery in Tajikistan without trekking.

Why go to Iskanderkul

Iskanderkul sits in a basin surrounded by bare rocky peaks, its water a bright turquoise that changes with the light. Its name links it to Alexander the Great, who is said to have passed through the region, and local legends tell of his horse living in the lake. Whatever the truth, it is one of the most beautiful places in Tajikistan that can be reached by car.

It is a good destination for travellers who want a taste of the mountains on a short trip, for families, and for anyone who wants to see the Fann Mountains without a multi-day trek.

What to see

The lake

Walk along the shore and up the slopes around the lake for viewpoints. Mornings are often still and clear, giving the best reflections. The lake lies at around 2,200 metres, so take it easy if you have just arrived from Dushanbe.

The waterfall

Below the lake, the Iskanderdarya river drops into a narrow gorge, forming a powerful waterfall. A short path leads to a viewing platform above it.

Snake Lake

A small lake a short walk from the main one, with clear water and a quieter atmosphere. Despite the name, it is a pleasant spot for a picnic.

Villages and walks

The valleys around Iskanderkul have small villages with orchards and fields. With a guide, you can walk between them, visit a family and see how life works in the mountains. Longer hikes lead towards the high Fann Mountains.

How many days

A day trip from Dushanbe is possible but long. We recommend one night at the lake, which gives you an evening and morning there. With two or three days you can combine Iskanderkul with the Seven Lakes of the Marguzor valley and the wider Fann Mountains.

Best season

June to September is best, with warm days and green valleys. In May and October nights are cold, and some facilities may be closed. In winter, snow can make the access road difficult, and accommodation is very limited.

How to get there

From Dushanbe, the road heads north over the mountains through the Anzob tunnel, then turns off along a side valley to the lake. The last section is a narrower mountain road. We use 4x4 vehicles or sturdy minibuses with experienced drivers. From the north, the same road links Iskanderkul with Khujand and the border with Uzbekistan, and from the west with Penjikent and Samarkand, subject to current border rules.

Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.

Where it fits in a route

Iskanderkul is often the first stop on a trip into the Fann Mountains from Dushanbe, as in our Tajikistan: Fann Mountains program. It also fits into a longer route connecting Samarkand and Dushanbe overland through the mountains.

Practical tips

Bring warm layers for the evening, sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and some cash, as card payment is rarely possible. Mobile coverage around the lake is limited. If you plan to walk beyond the shore, tell your driver or guesthouse where you are going and when you expect to be back, as the trails are not marked everywhere.

FAQ

How far is Iskanderkul from Dushanbe?

The drive usually takes three to four hours each way, depending on the road and stops. A day trip is possible, but an overnight is more relaxed.

Where can I stay at Iskanderkul?

There are simple guesthouses and a lakeside camp with cottages. Facilities are basic, and options are limited in high season, so book early.

Can I swim in the lake?

The water is very cold, even in summer. A quick dip is possible on warm days, but most visitors just walk along the shore.

Can I combine Iskanderkul with the Seven Lakes?

Yes. Both lie in the Fann Mountains, and a three-day loop from Dushanbe or a crossing towards Penjikent can include them.
