Hand Luggage: What You Can Take on a Plane

Hand luggage allowances depend on the airline and fare, while security rules depend on the airport. Here's where to find your allowance and how to pack your bag so you get through security without trouble.

Hand luggage questions are among the most common before a trip, and there’s no single answer. One airline allows a wheeled carry-on plus a backpack, while another, on a budget fare, allows only a small bag under the seat. So start by checking your own ticket.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel, and check baggage allowances on the airline’s website.

Where to Find Your Allowance

Hand luggage allowances depend on:

  • the airline, as each has its own rules;
  • the fare, as budget fares may limit you to one small item;
  • the class of service;
  • the route, since if you fly with different airlines, each one’s rules apply.

The allowance is shown on your e-ticket receipt, in your online account and on the airline’s website. If you book a tour with us, our manager will tell you the baggage and hand luggage allowance for your flight.

Pay attention not only to the weight but also to the dimensions on all three sides. Some carriers have sizing frames at the gate.

Liquids

As a rule, liquids in hand luggage are restricted:

  • small containers, each no larger than the set volume;
  • all containers in one clear, resealable bag;
  • the bag is taken out and shown separately at security.

Liquids also include gels, creams, pastes, aerosols, sauces, honey and yoghurt. Some airports are introducing new scanners and relaxing the rules, but if you have a connection, follow the strictest requirements along your route.

Exceptions are usually made for baby food and medicines in the quantity needed for the flight.

Electronics and Batteries

  • Power banks and spare lithium batteries go in hand luggage only. Checking them in is prohibited.
  • There are limits on battery capacity. High-capacity power banks may not be allowed on board.
  • Some airlines ban charging devices from a power bank during the flight.
  • Laptops and tablets sometimes need to be taken out of your bag at security.

What You Can’t Take in the Cabin

  • sharp objects: knives, scissors with long blades, tools;
  • flammable substances;
  • items that look like weapons.

The full list is on airport and airline websites. If in doubt, put the item in your checked baggage.

What to Always Keep in Hand Luggage

  • passport, tickets, visa, insurance;
  • cash and bank cards;
  • medicines you take regularly;
  • charger and power bank;
  • valuables and electronics;
  • a change of underwear and essentials for the first day, in case your baggage is delayed.

Travelling with Children

Baby food, bottles, nappies and wet wipes are usually allowed in the quantity needed for the flight. A folding stroller can often be checked in at the aircraft door. Airline rules differ, so check in advance.

Medicines

Keep medicines in their original packaging. For strong medicines, bring a prescription or a doctor’s note, preferably in English. Some medicines that are legal in Uzbekistan are banned from import in other countries, so check this for your destination.

Duty-Free Purchases

Liquids bought in duty-free are handed over in a sealed bag. If you change planes at another airport, that bag may not pass the second security check. If you have a connection, check the rules or shop at the last airport on your route.

For packing in general, see our guide on how to pack a suitcase, and for the rest of your preparations, the pre-flight checklist.

If Your Things Don’t Fit

If your hand luggage turns out to be over the limit at the gate, you may be asked to check it in for an extra fee. To avoid this, measure and weigh your bag at home before the trip.
