How to Choose a Hotel

The same hotel can be perfect for a young couple and inconvenient for a family with a toddler. Here is how to choose a hotel for your own trip rather than by other people's reviews.

  1. IPurpose of the trip first, stars second
  2. IIStar ratings mean different things in different countries
  3. IIIResort, city, boutique, adults-only: each has its own format
  4. IVThe room category affects your holiday as much as the hotel itself
  5. VThe hotel's age and renovation matter more than a nice description

People often choose a hotel by its photos and rating, and then wonder why “everything seems fine, but it’s not quite right”. For a hotel to suit you, start not with the catalog but with an understanding of your holiday: who you’re traveling with, what you’ll do during the day, and how much quiet, food and location matter.

Step 1. Define the purpose of the trip

  • A beach holiday without leaving the hotel. The beach, grounds, pools and food matter.
  • Beach plus sightseeing. A convenient location close to town; breakfast only may be enough.
  • A city break. Close to the metro and the sights, quiet at night.
  • A romantic trip. Atmosphere, a view, privacy, a good restaurant.
  • A holiday with children. Family facilities and safety.

Your answer determines which hotel features to look at first.

Step 2. Hotel type

Resort hotel

Large grounds, pools, a private beach, entertainment, several restaurants. Suits a holiday without leaving the hotel. The typical format for Turkey, Egypt and the UAE.

City hotel

Compact, without big grounds, often breakfast only. Location is what matters.

Boutique hotel

Small, with its own style and atmosphere. Fewer facilities but more personal attention.

Villa or apartment

Privacy and space. Suits a large family or group, and in Bali and the Maldives, couples too. You’ll have to cook or order food yourself unless meals are included.

Adults-only hotel

Quiet, calm, no children’s noise. A good choice for couples and honeymoons, covered in more detail in our guide honeymoon: where to go.

Step 3. Stars aren’t everything

Star ratings are awarded under different rules in different countries. In one country four stars can mean a large resort complex, in another a modest city hotel. So look not only at the stars but also at:

  • the year it was built and last renovated;
  • recent reviews;
  • real photos from guests;
  • the facilities you actually need.

Step 4. Choosing a room

The room category affects your holiday more than you might think:

  • Size. Standard rooms can be very small, especially in Europe.
  • View. Sea, garden, pool, or a “city view” that sometimes means the building next door.
  • Building location. The main building is closer to the restaurants; bungalows are quieter.
  • Bed type. Two singles or one double: check in advance.
  • For families. Family rooms with a partition, connecting rooms, space for a cot.

Step 5. Meals

At resort hotels, half board or all inclusive is often better value. In a city, breakfast is enough. More about the formats in our guide to all-inclusive holidays.

Step 6. Special needs

If elderly relatives are traveling with you, lifts, no stairs around the grounds and short distances matter. If your child has allergies, check whether you can order a special menu. If you’re working on holiday, you need stable Wi-Fi in the room. It’s best to discuss these points with the manager in advance.

Step 7. Check before paying

Once you’ve chosen a hotel, go through a short list: location, reviews, cancellation, meals, extra charges. Details in our guide what to check before booking a hotel.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the cheapest option in an expensive area, where the room can be tiny and windowless.
  • Booking a hotel far from the sea to save money, then spending it on taxis.
  • Ignoring transfer time: a two-hour drive from the airport with a small child is hard.
  • Relying on reviews from five years ago.

Hotels for short trips

If the trip is short, 3–4 days, location matters most: every hour on the road is an hour less of holiday. Choose a hotel close to the main places, even if the room is smaller.

FAQ

How many stars should I choose?

Stars are a guide, not a guarantee. A good renovated four-star hotel can be more comfortable than an outdated five-star, and standards vary between countries.

Which hotel should I choose for a holiday with children?

Look for family rooms, a kids' club and pool, a sandy beach with a gentle slope into the water, and a children's menu. For little ones, the distance from the airport matters.

What is an adults-only hotel?

It's a hotel that doesn't accept children, usually below a certain age. It's quieter and suits couples and anyone looking for a calm holiday.

Is a sea view worth paying extra for?

If you spend a lot of time in the room or are on your honeymoon, it often is. If you only need the room to sleep, you can save.
