Who Montenegro is for

Montenegro is for those who want a European seaside holiday without the bustle of big resorts. Couples and families love the quiet bays, old towns and beautiful views, while active travellers come for the mountains, rafting and trekking. Many people travel by car and cover almost the whole country in a week.

Hotels here are mostly small, with lots of apartments and villas. If you are used to big all-inclusive hotels, the choice will be more modest than in Turkey, but the atmosphere is more homely.

Seasons: when to go

The beach season runs from June to September. July and August are the peak, when Budva and Kotor are full of tourists and prices are higher. June and September are the best choice: the sea is warm and there are fewer people. If you are comparing summer destinations, take a look at where to go in summer.

May and October are good for sightseeing and the mountains, and in summer the Durmitor mountains are cooler than the coast. In winter a few small ski resorts are open.

Regions

The Budva Riviera

Budva is the main resort, with a walled old town, nightlife and a string of beaches. Nearby are Bečići, Petrovac and the famous island hotel of Sveti Stefan with the beach in front of it.

The Bay of Kotor

Kotor has fortress walls you can climb up to St. John’s Fortress. Perast has the islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George. Tivat has the Porto Montenegro yacht marina, and Herceg Novi sits at the entrance to the bay.

Ulcinj

In the south of the country, close to the Albanian border: the sandy Velika Plaža beach several kilometres long, a shallow sea and the oriental flavour of the old town.

Lake Skadar

The largest lake in the Balkans, a national park with pelicans, water lilies and monasteries on its islands. A boat trip is a nice addition to a beach holiday.

The north: Durmitor and the Tara Canyon

Mountains, glacial lakes such as the Black Lake in Žabljak, the Đurđevića Tara Bridge over the Tara Canyon, and rafting. People come here for a day or stay overnight.

What to see

  • The climb to the fortress above Kotor.
  • Perast and the island of Our Lady of the Rocks.
  • The view of Sveti Stefan from the lookout.
  • Lake Skadar by boat.
  • Ostrog Monastery, built into the cliffs.

Accommodation and food

Montenegro has many small family hotels, villas and apartments. Large resort hotels are found in Budva, Bečići and Tivat, as well as at upmarket Luštica Bay. Apartments are handy for families and groups: you can cook for yourselves and save money. Keep in mind that many buildings stand on slopes, and getting to the beach can mean going down steps.

Montenegrin cuisine means fresh fish and seafood on the coast, and kajmak, kačamak and lamb cooked under the sač in the mountains. The coast has lots of cafés serving pizza and pasta thanks to the proximity of Italy. Fruit and vegetable markets operate in almost every town.

How many days to plan

A beach holiday takes 7–10 nights, with excursions to Kotor, Lake Skadar and Durmitor. If you want more mountains, add 2–3 days in the north. Montenegro is sometimes combined with Dubrovnik in Croatia, but that requires a separate visa for Croatia, which is part of the Schengen area.

Entry and practical tips

Entry rules for citizens of Uzbekistan need to be checked before the trip. Montenegro has historically allowed holders of valid Schengen, US and UK visas to enter under certain conditions, but the rules may change. For more on Schengen, see our guide to the Schengen visa for citizens of Uzbekistan.

Montenegro uses the euro. Foreigners must register at their place of residence; in hotels the front desk does this for you. Mountain roads are narrow and winding, so drivers need experience.

Rules are given as of October 2026 and may change: check with our manager or the official embassy website before you travel.

Flights from Tashkent to Tivat or Podgorica: our manager will find direct and connecting options.
