Almaty: a city at the foot of the Tian Shan

Why go to Almaty

Almaty sits on the northern slopes of the Ile-Alatau range, and the mountains are visible from almost every street. The city itself is green, relaxed and has the best café and restaurant scene in the region. It was the capital of Kazakhstan until the 1990s and remains its cultural and business centre.

For travellers, Almaty combines comfort with access to nature. You can stay in a good hotel and still spend every day in the mountains, at canyons or by alpine lakes.

What to see in the city

Panfilov Park and Ascension Cathedral

The park in the centre is home to the colourful wooden Ascension Cathedral, built in the early 20th century and known for surviving a strong earthquake. Nearby are war memorials and the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments.

Green Bazaar

The main market sells dried fruit, nuts, cheeses, horse-meat sausages and Korean salads, a reminder of the many communities that live in Kazakhstan. Taste with a guide who can explain what you are trying.

Kok-Tobe

A cable car or road takes you up this hill for a panorama of the city and the mountains, best at sunset.

Museums and architecture

The Central State Museum gives an overview of Kazakh history, from nomadic empires to the present. Soviet-era buildings and mosaics, and newer architecture, show how the city has changed.

Mountains near the city

Medeu and Shymbulak

The road up the Medeu valley leads to a high-altitude skating rink and continues to the Shymbulak ski resort. A cable car climbs further, giving views across peaks and glaciers. In summer this area is good for easy walks.

Big Almaty Lake

An alpine lake south of the city, famous for its turquoise colour, which changes with the season. It lies in a protected area, so access is controlled; we arrange it with a licensed driver.

Day and overnight trips

The two classic trips from Almaty go east: Charyn Canyon with its red sandstone towers, and the Kolsai lakes with Kaindy. They can be combined in a two-day loop with a night in Saty village. Our Almaty and the Tian Shan program brings these together.

How many days

  • 2 days: city and Medeu, Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake.
  • 4–5 days: add Charyn, Kaindy and Kolsai.
  • 6+ days: add hiking, a trip to Altyn-Emel national park, or the road to Kyrgyzstan.

Best season

Late May to early October is the season for mountains and lakes. June and September are the most comfortable. Winter brings snow, skiing at Shymbulak and clear days, though some mountain roads can be closed.

How to get there

Almaty has the main international airport in south-east Kazakhstan, with flights from Europe, Asia and other Central Asian capitals. From Tashkent, travellers usually fly; our team selects direct or connecting options. The road to Bishkek takes a few hours, including the border crossing.

Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.

Where to stay

The central districts near Panfilov Park and the main avenues are best for walking. Hotels in the upper part of the city are closer to the mountains.
