Charyn Canyon is the most dramatic landscape within reach of Almaty: red sandstone walls and towers carved by wind and water. It works as a long day trip or as the first stop of a lakes loop.

best time
May–June and September–October; summer is hot on the canyon floor
highlights
East of Almaty, the steppe suddenly drops away into a canyon cut by the Charyn river. Its walls of red, orange and ochre sandstone have been shaped into towers, arches and fins that really do look like ruined castles. It is often compared to American canyon landscapes, though it is smaller and far less crowded.
The canyon is part of a national park and is easy to visit. You do not need hiking experience: the main walk follows the dry floor of a side gorge down to the river.
This is the best-known section. From the parking area and visitor facilities, a path descends into the gorge and runs between tall rock formations to the Charyn river. The walk takes one to two hours each way at a relaxed pace, with plenty of photo stops. Some visitors use the park’s shuttle for part of the route when it operates.
Before going down, walk along the rim for wide views over the canyon. Light is best in the morning and late afternoon, when the colours are strongest and the shadows give depth to the rock.
At the end of the trail, the river flows fast and cold, lined with trees. It is a good place for a picnic before the walk back.
The canyon is long, and other areas, such as the Yellow and Black canyons, are less visited and require 4x4 access. The park also protects a relict ash grove along the river. We can add these on a longer program.
Charyn can be a long day trip from Almaty: leave early, spend three to four hours at the canyon and return in the evening. We prefer to include it in a two-day loop with Kaindy and the Kolsai lakes, which reduces driving and lets you see the canyon in better light.
May, June, September and early October are best. In July and August the canyon floor gets very hot in the middle of the day, so visits should start early. In winter the canyon can be dusted with snow and is very quiet, but some roads and facilities may be limited.
The canyon is reached by road from Almaty, heading east through the steppe. There is no convenient public transport for a day trip, so a private car or minibus with a driver is the practical option. We include park entry arrangements and plan the route to avoid driving back in the dark on mountain roads.
Charyn is a natural part of any trip to south-east Kazakhstan, as in our Almaty and the Tian Shan program. Travellers continuing to Kyrgyzstan can sometimes cross the border further east towards Karakol, depending on whether that crossing is open to foreigners at the time; otherwise, the route goes back via Almaty to Bishkek.
Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.
Sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and at least one to two litres of water per person, even in spring. Shoes with good grip for the descent. A light jacket for the evening, as the steppe cools quickly after sunset.
Send us your dates and group size. We build a day trip or a lakes loop with a driver, guide and accommodation, and send you a quote.

It is about 200 kilometres east of Almaty, which usually takes around three to four hours by car, depending on stops and traffic.
No. It is a mostly flat walk of a few kilometres on the canyon floor, with a descent at the start and a climb back. Good shoes, water and sun protection are essential.
Yes, this is the most popular plan. Visit Charyn on the way east, spend the night in Saty village, and see Kaindy and Kolsai the next day.
There are a few simple eco-camps and guesthouses near the canyon. Most visitors stay in Saty or return to Almaty.

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and the best base in Central Asia for mountain day trips. In the morning you walk through leafy avenues, in the afternoon you can be at 3,000 metres.

The Kolsai lakes lie in a spruce-filled gorge in the northern Tian Shan, and nearby Kaindy hides the trunks of a drowned forest. Together they make the most scenic short trip from Almaty.
A modern city at the foot of the mountains, an alpine lake and the canyons of the steppe.

South-east Kazakhstan packs high mountains, canyons and alpine lakes within a few hours of Almaty. We plan private trips and group programs that often continue into Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan.
