Bishkek: the green gateway to Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek is a relaxed, leafy capital with mountains on its doorstep. Most trips to Kyrgyzstan start here, with a day in the city and an easy escape into the Ala-Archa gorge.

Why go to Bishkek

Bishkek is not a city of grand monuments, and that is part of its charm. Wide streets are lined with trees, parks are full of people in the evening, and the snowy Kyrgyz Ala-Too range rises right behind the city. It is a comfortable place to arrive, adjust and prepare for a trip into the mountains.

The city also gives a good introduction to Kyrgyz culture through its museums, its bazaar and the felt crafts sold in small shops and workshops.

What to see in the city

Ala-Too square and the centre

The main square is surrounded by Soviet-era buildings and the State Historical Museum, which covers the history of the country from nomadic times. A walk through Oak Park and along the central boulevards shows the city’s monuments and public art.

Osh bazaar

The largest market in the city sells everything from dried fruit and kurut, salty dried yoghurt balls, to traditional hats and household goods. Go with a guide if you want to understand what you see.

Felt crafts

Kyrgyz shyrdak carpets and other felt products are made by stitching or pressing wool. Visiting a workshop or a shop run by a craft cooperative is a good way to see the technique and buy directly.

Around Bishkek

Ala-Archa national park

Less than an hour south of the city, this gorge has a river, juniper and spruce forests and views of high peaks. Walks range from an easy stroll to a demanding full-day hike towards the Ak-Sai glacier area. It is the best way to get used to altitude before heading into the mountains.

Burana tower

About an hour east, near Tokmok, stands the Burana tower, the remains of a minaret of the medieval city of Balasagun. The site has a small museum and a field of balbals, carved stone figures from earlier Turkic times. It is usually visited on the way to Issyk-Kul.

How many days

Plan one to two days. Arrive, explore the city and bazaar, then spend a day in Ala-Archa. Many travellers also return to Bishkek at the end of their trip for a night before the flight home.

Best season

May to October is the best time for mountain trips. The city itself is pleasant in spring and autumn, hot in summer and cold in winter, but visits are possible year-round.

How to get there

Bishkek’s international airport is outside the city. From Almaty, the road takes a few hours including the border, and many travellers combine the two cities. From Tashkent, flights are the usual choice; our team selects direct or connecting options. Overland crossings between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the Fergana Valley are another possibility, depending on the current rules.

Information checked in October 2026; entry rules change, so confirm with our team or the official embassy website before you travel.

Where it fits in a route

Bishkek is the start of most loops around Kyrgyzstan: east to Issyk-Kul and Karakol, then into the high pastures of Song-Kul and back to the capital. This is the shape of our Kyrgyzstan: lakes and nomads program.

Where to stay

The city centre, around the main avenues and parks, is the most convenient area. There are international hotels, boutique hotels and comfortable guesthouses.
