travel guide
Central Asia has two calendars: one for desert cities and one for high mountains. The best months for your trip depend on which of them matters more to you.

highlights
Central Asia covers deserts below sea level and peaks above 7,000 metres. A single month can be ideal in one place and impossible in another, so planning starts with deciding what kind of trip you want.
Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Ashgabat and the lowland parts of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have hot, dry summers and cold winters. The best periods are April to May and September to October. Midsummer brings intense heat, especially in Khiva, Karakalpakstan and Turkmenistan’s Karakum desert. Details for Uzbekistan are in our guide to the best time to visit Uzbekistan.
Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are mostly mountainous, and south-east Kazakhstan rises into the Tian Shan behind Almaty. Here, the season for high-altitude travel runs roughly from June to September. Snow can block passes outside this window, and some roads open only once snow is cleared.
Spring and autumn are prime time. Summer works with an early-morning rhythm. Winter is quiet and atmospheric for city trips.
Almaty is a year-round city. Charyn Canyon is pleasant in spring and autumn and hot in midsummer. The Kolsai lakes are best from late May to early October. Winter brings skiing in the mountains above Almaty.
Peak season is July and August, with June and September close behind. Yurt camps on Song-Kul, at around 3,000 metres, operate only in summer, and nights there are cold even in July. Issyk-Kul’s shore is a summer holiday destination for locals. See Song-Kul for details.
The Fann Mountains are best from June to September for trekking. The Pamir Highway is most reliable from late June to September; outside that, high passes can be snowbound. Dushanbe is accessible year-round, though summer is hot.
Spring and autumn are best. Summer is extremely hot, and the Darvaza crater is better visited when evenings are cool. Winter is cold but dry and quiet.
Even in summer, mountain weather changes quickly. Expect warm days and near-freezing nights at altitude, sudden rain or hail, and strong sun. Good layers, a warm jacket and sun protection are essential for any program that includes yurt stays or trekking.
Navruz on 21 March is celebrated across the region with family feasts and public events. In Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, summer brings horse games and nomadic festivals in some years and locations. Religious holidays such as Eid follow the lunar calendar and shift each year, so we check the calendar for your dates and adjust bookings around busy holiday travel.
The most popular multi-country trips run in late summer: mountains first while passes are open, then cities as the heat fades in September. Our five-country itinerary explains how we sequence them.
Tell us your preferred dates and the places you want to see. We will check what is realistic for that season, suggest adjustments if needed, and send a program with a quote.

September is the best all-round month. Mountain roads are still open, the heat in the desert cities has eased, and markets are full of harvest produce.
Both are summer destinations. Yurt camps at Song-Kul run roughly from June to September, and the Pamir Highway is most reliable from late June to September.
Yes, for city trips and winter sports. Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Almaty are open year-round; high passes, alpine lakes and yurt camps are mostly inaccessible.

April, May, September and October are the classic months for Uzbekistan, but every season has a case. Here is what each part of the year feels like in Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and the mountains.

Visiting all five Central Asian countries in one journey is possible, but the route has to follow borders, seasons and visa logic rather than the map alone. This guide explains how we approach it.

Song-Kul is an alpine lake at around 3,000 metres, surrounded by wide pastures where shepherd families bring their herds every summer. A night in a yurt here is the most memorable experience of many trips to Kyrgyzstan.

The Pamir Highway crosses some of the highest and most remote terrain in Asia. A 4x4 journey here combines river gorges, the Wakhan valley along the Afghan border, a high desert plateau and Pamiri village hospitality.

South-east Kazakhstan packs high mountains, canyons and alpine lakes within a few hours of Almaty. We plan private trips and group programs that often continue into Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan.
